UFC coming to Hawaii with or without BJ Penn

source: mmaweekly.com

According to UFC President Dana White, the plan for the UFC’s first ever show in Hawaii was to have former lightweight and welterweight champion B.J. Penn headline a card at the Aloha Bowl.

Unfortunately when Penn lost to Nick Diaz at UFC 137 last October, the Hawaiian has opted to take some much needed time off and it threw a bit of a monkey wrench into their plans.

“We’re still working on that, but we want to do it. I was kind of hoping to go to Hawaii again and do a B.J. (Penn) fight at the Aloha Bowl, but B.J. wants to take some time off. He’s going to relax for a while,” White revealed about the UFC going to Hawaii.

“We’re coming regardless,” said White. “But that was the fight I really wanted to do there.”

I think BJ needs to be on the card as co-main, not the main event unless he is fighting for a title. (Maybe vs Ben Henderson if he wins?). I still like the Nate Marquardt fight. These guys were offering to beat the hell out of each other for free in each others gyms not too long ago. I'd do this card: Winner of Jon Jones/Rashad Evans vs Lil Nog BJ Penn vs Nate Marquardt Hendo vs Shogun 2 Joe Lauzon vs Nate Diaz (title eliminator) Jason Miller vs Demian Maia Pat Barry vs Ednaldo Oliveira Stephen Thompson vs Amir Sadollah And throw Max Hollaway in there too. Get the west side of the island to come out.

Where is the Aloha Bowl? I think they mean Aloha Stadium? Anyways, people here would be incredibly stoked to go to an actual UFC event even if BJ doesn't fight. I know people who fly up to Vegas just for the fights and many who said they would if they had the money so I'm sure that the attendance would be high. And not just un numbets either.

So far we got:MayhemChris LebanMax HollowayBrad TavaresTravis BrowneB.J. PennAnyone else?I doubt you will get R. Penn or Kendall from Pro Elite for this card.It is possible they could make this a SF vs UFC card and treat it like a pro bowl type event and make it once a year in Hawaii. Would be a cool concept and could make for some interesting match ups. Could do B.J. Penn vs Gilbert for the title

Not sure that would happen as Gray did a couple camps training with BJ in Hilo years ago, brought in as a wrestler training partner, not sure how either feel about it though.

Penn vs Maynard maybe? Neither guy got a fight right now, safe fight for Penn on paper, however if Gray wins he is right back in the mix...
