Dos Santos vs. Overeem targeted for UFC 146 in Las Vegas

As is becoming the norm, the first word was on twitter. Last night UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta had insomnia, and fielded a large number of questions on twitter. Fertitta was asked if the JDS vs. Overeem heavyweight title defense was going to be on a big Summer card? "Memorial day weekend vegas" Fertitta replied definitively.

That would put it on May 26, in Las Vegas, at UFC 146.

Alistair Overeem, a former Strikeforce champion who was released by the organization and quickly signed by its sister promotion, made his official UFC debut at UFC 141 at MGM Grand Garden Arena. By knocking out ex-champ Lesnar (for his 11th straight win), he set up the upcoming heavyweight title fight with current champ Dos Santos.

Meanwhile, champ Dos Santos is recovering from a torn meniscus in his left knee. In January, he told MMAjunkie.com Radio that he was nearing full health.

"In another 20 days, I'll be feeling 100 percent again," Dos Santos said. "Then I need two-and-a-half (months) to do my camp, and then I'm ready to do."

"we may not even see much clinch or knees if JDS controls the distance and outboxes Reem".This is what I'm expecting, I think JDS has way better boxing than Reem. Reem will have the size and power advantage but I think the boxing and speed of JDS will prove to be sufficient to overcome that, then again one shot can change everything and that's why it's so intriguing.

In those categories, I give JDS a 3-2 edge. In fact, we may not even see much clinch or knees if JDS controls the distance and outboxes Reem. This could be an impressive KO for Dos Santos.

There are a lot of unanswered questions in the current UFC heavyweight division, it's going to be interesting how it all works out.

JDS wins this... I cannot pick either guy who I WANT to win though.. I love them equally. They are... my two favorite HW's.. I liked JDS a long time back and Overeem as well.

This is probably the single-most fight I DO care about.Beyond anything they could put on.In fact... this is like my my favorite matchup of any matchup they could do.. probably in the next year or two. i can't think of any other I would care more about.This to me shits on GSP vs Diaz... or any other fight.

I am a big fan of Benny Urquidez, "Urquidez is known for once holding the rare achievement of 6 World Titles in 5 different weight divisions, and Urquidez remained largely undefeated in his 27 year career. His only loss came in a Muay Thai bout". If we only had a time machine, the matches we could make.

^^^Honestly it's difficult for me to comment on those guys, because outside of Don Wilson, I didn't really get to see much of them. Wilson was very talented, and had a very odd style where he used his front leg more like a jab to keep his opponent at range. I don't think he did a lot of fights where low kicks were allowed so it would have been interesting to see how his style would have held up against a strong muay thai stylist like Rob Kaman. Kaman was a monster and may be the greatest Dutch fighter of all time. That's saying something. I will say that's one of things I always respected about Rick, even before training with him, was how willing he was to go outside of his comfort level. He was one of the few American kickboxers who was willing to go and fight a thai fighter with low kicks allowed back in the 1980s. The first time he did it he had both his leg broken against Changpuek Kiatsongrit(had to google that for spelling). I don't think anyone would have blamed him if he had said screw that and never fought under those rules again. Obviously he didn't and went on to fight in K-1 and beat accomplished leg kickers like Stan "The Man" Longinidis.

Johnny D - Hey nhbguy, just out of curiosity who's your favorite all time kick boxer, I know there are a lot of names that could be considered for that place, just want to know who's your personal favorite and why. I trained with Rick Roufus for 2 years, so I'd have to put him up there. As far just guys I enjoyed watching, probably Buakaw and Jerome Le Banner. Le Banner was an absolute monster in his prime, a seek and destroy killer.Buakaw is one of the most exciting muay thai fighters of all time. Watching him absolutely steamroll through the 2004 K-1 Max Finals was a sight to see. Before they changed the clinch rules in K-1, Buakaw looked to be borderline unbeatable in Japan. Relentless pressure fighter who breaks people down physically and mentally. Even though I think he may have lost a step since his heyday, I would love to see a rematch with him and Giorgio Petrosyan.Very respectable choices, you known your kickboxers. Where do you think the pioneers of the sport, names like Benny Urquidez, Don Wilson, and Bill Wallace just to name a few fit into the over all greatest list ? Some of these guys were tough as hell, by the way I am a huge Rick Roufus fan, he's definitely one of my favorites, now I am seriously jealous.

i think people arlready say that about jds. dude has one mode: punch.will reem be the best? no. not yet. he will have won the belt but i think he would need to do some more damage in mma before i would want to say he is the best. was he badass in the k-1 grnd prix? yeah. he defended his strikefroce title...but it was brett rogers. i'm not even trying to talk shit about brett or anything but brett just isn't at the top. than overeem beats duffee for a belt that never existed before and hasn't been defended since. than he went against werdum and didn't look that great. than he put the final nail in lesnar.let the man win the title first than after we see what he does with it than maybe talk. i just feel like as soon as he wins the belt millions of uberreem fans with uber man crushes are going to start wanting to call overeem the best...wow can't wait for that. :-/
