Shields earns tough decision win over Akiyama

Jake Shields' relentless pressure may have earned him a decision win over Yoshihiro Akiyama.

But the margin by which he did it was highly suspect. After three rounds, judges awarded the welterweight every round of the fight.

The fight took place on the main card of UFC 144, which took place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. It aired live on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Yes dude in the fights that are mostly ground-based the judges are supposed to place a higher priority on that.K.Judges shall use a sliding scale and recognize the length of time the fighters are either standing or on the ground, as follows:i.if the mixed martial artists spent a majority of a round on the canvas, then:a.Effective grappling is weighed first; andb.Effective striking is then weighedii. If the mixed martial artists spent a majority of a round standing, then:a.Effective striking is weighed first; andb.Effective grappling is then weighedNo, in this fight takedowns are just further down the list than effective striking and Jake's were more effective.E.Effective striking is judged by determining the total number of legal strikes landed by a contestant.I didn't cut and paste certain parts of the definition of 'effective striking'. That's it.

They do in fights that are contested mostly standing up.

I thought this fight was quit interesting. It was not necessarily very good though so aspects of it where pretty amazing (Akiyama's take-down defense, his judo throws and Shields relentlessness).I personally also thought Akiyama also lost the fight. I could not understand his striking at all. He is a pretty decent boxer, has some power in his hands and usually throws a fair amount of strikers. Now he started coming out with this silly ''stance'' (more of a positioning of his arms),almost did not throw any strikes at all and hardly landed any either (more through lack of commitment in my eyes then awesome evasive footwork on Shields part). I personally think the cut was either to hard or he waited for get the KO punch to much.In the end he got beat by a Shields who out worked him in the field where he was suppose to have a big edge.As for Shield,i do respect his work ethic but his striking still looked pretty horrendous and ineffective. And the fact that he could not get a single real take-down (apart from tie up at the end) was kind of worrisome. I think he is a long way of from title contention. On a final note,i do not think the UFC should drop Akiyama yet. I think he should get one more fight at welterweight to see if it was the cut that was bothering him or he really is lacking skill/heart to compete convincingly.

Akiyama needs to do more work in the fight. He fought sedately and didn't really do much at all besides the TDs and a few good punches. He should have known he was down on the score cards.Jake was more busy and landed a shit ton of strikes, even if they did little to no damage.

Akiyama's sole contribution to this fight were 3 beautiful but ineffective takedowns. This must be his worst fight ever. I'm afraid age is catching up with him.

I was really weirded out by the fact that Akiyama seemed to be willing to eat tons of strikes but he wasn't walking through them. They didn't seem to phase him much but he just stood there and took them or moved away. He could have easily walked through them but didn't try to impose his striking beyond a strike or two, where were the combinations from Akiyama???? I was really saddened by that, big time Sexyama fan and he just didn't deliver even though it seemed like he had all the chances to do so. He was constantly brawling and instead this time decides to just eat shots and hope for throws that lead to....? Really confused by his strategy, he had the control but didn't pull the trigger. Hoping he doesn't get cut, Shields is in a weird spot, he hasn't looked great in the UFC.
