Diaz to compete in sport BJJ super fight

by Ariel Helwani | source: mmafighting.com

While Nick Diaz's MMA future may still be in doubt, the former Strikeforce welterweight champion has decided to return to his Brazilian jiu-jitsu roots.

The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo and Cesar Gracie, Diaz's trainer and manager, have confirmed that Diaz will compete in a BJJ super-fight at the WJJE on May 12 in Long Beach, Calif.

According to Gracie, Diaz wanted to enter one of the WJJE's tournaments, however, Expo officials chose to have him only compete in a super-fight. No opponent has been signed just yet.

Would be funny if they did do a straight bjj match after both retiring from mma. BJ would and should be a heavy favorite.

The fact that this is even an argument demonstrates how many more mma fans are on this forum than bjj fans

what they are saying is that bj hasnt kept his gi game up which is ignorant. its not as if he won mundials and took off his gi till now.i dont find the former champ argument to be weak at all. it is very relevant. you have two bjj practitioners abt same age and years in bjj but one beat the best in the world the other has not. thats not weak. it is as good an argument as we have until they compete against each other or the same opponent. all other arguments are opinion on this subject. the only relevant fact we have is bj won vs the best and nick has not. however bj had ufc belts in two weight classes and they didnt help him beat nick in mma...

I don't think anyone is saying he doesn't know modern day bjj. Just saying he will destroy diaz because he was a world champ at bjj over a decade ago is a weak argument

both guys are great bjj practitioners and have done great in mma. both still do plenty of gi work to stay competitive in the gi. no need to assume they have regressed. bj has better credentials by far but he has better credentials in mma as well with multi ufc belts and it didnt get him the w in mma...would be great to see these two go at it with the kimono.

Hasn't Nick been doing BJJ for longer than BJ? That counts for something...
