Gegard post ACL surgery, love to fight Jones

by Derek Bolender | source:

In an interview with MMAJunkie Radio, Gegard Mousasi revealed that in March he tore his ACL, and underwent surgery to rerpair it. Now he is in physical rehab. Why did no one know?

"No one asked," Mousasi quipped. "But the operation was successful. The recovery is doing very well. I will be back 100 percent again, but it will just take time."

"I had one fight left (on my Strikeforce contract). Then I was hoping maybe to go to the UFC after that, but then they offered me – they said we're going to give you a new contract. So I signed for another six fights. Now I have a six-, seven-fight deal, I believe, in Strikeforce."

"They said the Strikeforce fighters were going to stay with Strikeforce. And that's the thing that it was, so we signed again."

The new contract means a teenage dream of representing The Netherlands in the Olympics as a boxer will not come to pass.

"I think I would have had a chance," Mousasi said. "I don't think my chances would have been very high, but I believed in myself, and I train with Olympic trainers from Holland, and they said there's definitely potential. Those things I experienced, I thought maybe it was possible, but no doubt it would have been very difficult.

"It would have been nice. But there's nothing wrong with focused just on MMA."

Mousasi has held the DREAM belt (successor to Pride, kind of), the Cage Warriors belt (biggest in Europe), and the Strikeforce belt. A shot is obviously not close, but Mousasi speculated about Jon Jones' UFC Lightheavy belt.

"I'm not afraid of fighting anybody because I never got hurt in any fight – kickboxing, boxing, MMA. I may have lost a fight, but I've never been hurt in a fight. I'm always confident that whatever happens, I got my chance. And I know I have a good punch, so I never doubt myself that I can win a fight or not.

"I'd love to fight him."

This is the game guy who gut wrestlefucked by King Mo for 25 minutes on his way to losing his title in his first defense, right?  He wouldn't make it up the ladder to face Jones.

5/14/12 11:53 AM by InYourMomaCloset the short term that is. UFC would probably give him a less favorable deal initially, until he wins his first couple fights. Then he gets to the big money, big fights. 99% sure his extortionist management didn't want to take that chance. They want quick and assured dough. Strikeforce obviously had that to offer. But he's shooting himself in the foot long term, albeit 99% sure his extortionist management are pulling the strings and he doesn't know better.
