"You know you are a genuinely great guy when kids who are pure at heart just want to be with you. Everywhere we went kids were always drawn to Billy."
Billy Rush, famed Strength, Conditioning, and Nutrition guru for a host of fighters including Jeremy Horn, Tim Sylvia, Joe Riggs, and Rich Franklin, passed away on June 6, 2012, at the age of 37.
A household name among the hard-core fanbase, the former professional fighter turned S&C expert was called "The Mad Scientist" by Joe Rogan, for his unorthodox and successful methods.
Rush was renowned for customizing diet plans for a fighter, that might change drastically over the course of a camp. He was so dedicated to his craft, he was known for living with a fighter to handle all nutritional needs.
A fierce opponent of PEDs, beyond some simple vitamins, Rush's approach was all about food. Further, he cautioned against massive water cuts immediately prior to weigh ins, preferring a highly organized and proprietary diet regimen over the weeks before a fight.
Rush got his start in MMA in 2001 when he, Jorge Gurgel, and Rich Franklin began teaching together. The methods he practiced so successfully were self-taught, and so uniquely crafted for each fighter that they could not be commited to a book or other media, a further testament to his uniqueness in the field.
Billy Rush is survived by his wife Tracie. The couple had no children.
