Culinary Union reaches despicable new low

source: fightlinker

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 has for years failed in its attempts to unionize the Station group of hotel-casinos in Las Vegas. Station Casinos is owned by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who are also majority owners of the UFC.

Although the UFC has nothing to do with culinary workers, and indeed provides a vast amount of union work at arenas across the nation, and the world, it has become a target of the union. Anti-UFC steps the union has taken include:
Backed anti-MMA legislators in New York;
Called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate UFC parent company Zuffa, which the union accuses of using monopolistic tactics to thwart competition from other MMA promoters;
Launched a website complaining that UFC President Dana White swears a lot;
Launched an online petition calling on FOX to back away from a deal to broadcast UFC events;
Demand Anheuser-Busch pull its Bud Light sponsorship of the UFC
Supported wacky MMA legislation in California.

Where organized labor once lifted millions of exploited workers into the middle class, the Culinary Union is now spending member dues to accuse Dana White of using naughty words, and Joe Rogan of calling someone 'cunty' on the UG. And the union's issue is not even with the UFC to begin with.

The logic behind the actions is difficult to fathom. The majority of steps taken thus far are comical. The main exception is supporting anti MMA efforts in New York, which hurts fans and fighters, the economy of New York state, and every employee at Madison Square Garden, a union shop.

The lastest step is not comical, its is contemptible.

UNITE HERE: Veterans Call on Marine Corps to Cut Ties with the UFC

Veterans Committee of UNITE HERE voices support for the “UFC Amendment” to ban military sponsorships of pro sports.

“As a Marine, I am deeply offended that the Marine Corps would ever associate itself with organizations that tolerate homophobia and hate speech like the UFC,” said Ryan Hand, a former Corporal of the Marine Corps and member of UNITE HERE New England Joint Board Local 406 in Saco, Maine. “As a taxpayer, our money can be better spent elsewhere, particularly as the Defense Department prepares deep cuts to the military.”

In a letter to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James F. Amos, the Veterans Committee of UNITE HERE wrote, “We believe that, by aligning with the UFC, an organization that has tolerated homophobia, misogyny and hate speech, the Marine Corps is violating its stated commitment of `maintaining dignity and respect for one another.’ Homophobia and hatred, in any form, are not consistent with the values that make the Marines an elite fighting force.”

Through its sponsorship of the UFC, the Marine Corps has trivialized service to our country by juxtaposing images of Marines fighting for our country with UFC fighters. (See an example here) “Those men and women who have fought and risked their lives overseas in no way, shape or form resemble the bullies of the UFC,” said Albert Bolduc, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran and member of UNITE HERE New England Joint Board Local 687T in Simsbury, Conn. “The UFC is the antithesis of what every service member should stand for — honor, discipline and self respect.”

Given the millions of dollars the UFC has raised or veterans, and the extraordinary popularity of the sport among military personnel, the culinary union has now fully exposed itself as a scummy, shabby, contemptible disgrace.

I'm only opposed to closed-shop laws, and public sector unions. Closed-shop laws are an affront to the right of free association, and public sector unions hold everyone's interests hostage to further the interests of a small group of beneficiaries.In a perfect world, unionized labor forces would be exempt from the protections of OSHA and other regulatory bodies, and would use their collective bargaining powers for work conditions as well as wages/benefits.

Hmm...it appears this site's ownership has given up on being a legitimate, objective news source.

Just out of curiousity UGCTT--do you share the same outrage towards corporations who use shareholder profits in the very same activities (just with substantially more spending power)?     And thank you for only wishing my internet access be tossed off a high bridge!
