White listens to fans, Bader vs. Machida winner could get title shot too

During a UFC on FOX 4 call held yesterday, the light heavyweight title path was laid out by UFC President Dana White. The winner of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Brandon Vera would fight the winner of Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson, for the UFC light-heavyweight title.

He later told USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com that co-headliners Ryan Bader and Lyoto Machida also will have that opportunity.

"Whoever wins the most impressively on Saturday night gets the shot at the title," White said.

White's decision comes after a rash of fan backlash following his original announcement. UFC's social-media-savvy fanbase immediately took to Twitter to protest the decision while citing Rua's recent losses to both current champion Jon Jones and the champ's UFC 151 opponent, Dan Henderson – as well as Vera's current run of just one win in four appearances – as reasons why the bout did not deserve to be considered a No. 1 contender's contest.

White said he listened to the complaints, and he's making a change.

"I put together the fights that fans want to see," White said. "The fans didn't like the Rua and Vera choice, so here it is: The guy that wins most impressively on Saturday night out of the co-main event and the main event will get the shot at the winner of Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson."

Chance of most devastating finish:1) Shogun2) MachidaI'm undecided between 3 and 4. I don't think Bader has a much better shot than Vera.

I agree.I think Mousasi is a great fighter with excellent stand up and an outstanding ground game. It's just a shame that people count him out after a bad fight with Jardine (which he really should've won). I would really like to see him in the UFC and go up against Jones 'cause I think he matches up well against him, or so it seems to me at least. Though it would be great to see him at MW and breathe some life into that division.

I agree that none of these rematches make much sense right now but I can't say that I would complain about seeing Lyoto or a healthy Shogun fight Bones/Hendo. Those are all guaranteed to be good fights.

Dana is banking on Shogun looking like a killer and getting the shot. He knows Rua is the best out of the 4 and the biggest threat to Jones IF he comes in prepared and in proper condition

really hoping machida gets the nod. was giving jones trouble the first time round, hopefully he can expand on this next time using the experience of already fighting jones to exploit any holes in jones game

Watch, both fights end up as 3 round (or I guess Vera / Shogun ends up as a 5 round) snoozer.I can see Bader / Lyoto being boring and while Shogun isn't really in any boring fights Vera needs to engage to do so.

I will bet any amount of money this announcement was made because Dana doesnt think Vera has earned the shot. The Machida/Bader winner gives dfw an out if Vera happens to win.

This would be a perfect time for Anderson vs Jones. Would help give time to build up a contender.
