UFC vet James McSweeney stops armed robbery in Vegas

source: The Underground

Former UFC fighter (and current UGer) James McSweeney's mother and sister were visiting from London, and he was showing them Fremont Street.  His sister wanted to get some Las Vegas branded touristy items so he took them to a nearby ABC convience store.

Two men were arguing loudly inside the store near the door. When the female clerk went over to ask them to take it outside, one pulled a knife and directred her back to the register. The second man took position near the door. The man with the knife started grabbing cash out of the register.

James grabbed the knife wielder's wrist, put his hand on his shoulder and swept him face first to the floor, stunning him. James knelt put one knee in the middle of the man's back and immobilized the knife hand by trapping it in the crook of his other other knee.  The second thief seeing his partner down and trapped, bolted for the door. No one was injured, other than some minor scrapes on the face of the would be thief.

The robber was just beginning to recover when the police arrived.

The London, England born McSweeny moved to Thailand to train full time in Muay Thai at age 15. He went on to win numerous titles in the Science of Eight Limbs.

In 2006, he transitioned to mixed martial arts, initially moving in with Rashad Evans. He moved from Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, NM in Grudge Training Centre in Denver, CO.

He was a cast member of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, where he beat Wes Shivers and Matthew Mitrione, before losing to Roy Nelson. At the The Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights Finale he defeated Darrill Schoonover.

He then went 0-2 in the UFC, losing to Travis Browne and Fabio Maldonado, and was released by the organization.

McSweeney now runs his own Sledgehammer MMA in Ramsgate, Kent, UK.

it's true, i remember one lady told me some kid threw a head kick at him and he said gets some shin pads on if you want to do that shit, he then swarmed him with punches and tried to knee him in the face and pissed him off so even with shin pads on james threw a nasty leg kick that buckled the guy and told him to come back when he cools off. he left cursing and i guess never came back.

it closed like a few weeks after he moved, was opened for like 6 or more months, heard alot of stories from people who trained there, said was a solid gym, but they said alot of wannabes would come in and try to test him, like throw head kicks without any shin pads and shit. the place was one of the better facilitys in colorado from what i saw of it.
