Helwani: I heard Jones deal with Nike is worth $20k per year
On this week's The MMA Hour, Ariel Helwani reported an utterly baffling figure about Jon Jones' deal with Nike. According to Helwani's source, Jones is not getting Anderson Silva money from Nike, he's getting McDonald's money - not sponsorship from McDonalds, but burger flipping at McDonalds money. "Congratulations to Jon Jones for signing that big deal with Nike," said Helwani. "According to Dana White he will be dressed in Nike from head to toe. Come September 1st, he will be wearing Nike, inside the Octagon... "He is not the first guy, to have the swoosh on him in a fight of course. Anderson Silva was representing Nike when he fought Chael Sonnen. But this is a different kind of deal. "This is a global deal. This is the first North American fighter to be sponsored by Nike "What I heard from one source, just one, was that it was a one year deal worth $20,000. That's what I heard, but I have not been able to confirm that with multiple sources. One source very close to Jon, by the way, I should say. It's not like it's just source your know out of the blue." Given that Ari Emanuel who brokered the deal wears $20,000 suits, and that Jon Jones is the future of MMA, the $20,000 per year figure is absurd. $20,000 per month is vastly more plausible. (7:30 mark) In fact, on the MMA hour Ariel recently said the figure was in error. Helwani related that he received a phone call from Jon Jones stating that the $20,000 figure he reported Jones earned for the Nike deal was incorrect. Ariel contends that his source is generally very reliable and apologized to Jones for the mistake. Source: MMAFighting.com The MMA Hour 8/20 Related MMA gear from the UG Store
