Edgar steps into for injured Koch for title fight with Aldo

Despite a pair of disappointing losses to current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, former titleholder Frankie Edgar (14-3-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) will now get his shot at history.

USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) have learned that an undisclosed injury has forced Erik Koch (13-1, 2-0) to withdraw from a planned UFC 153 title fight with current featherweight champion Jose Aldo (21-1, 3-0), and Edgar has agreed to step into the evening's main event.

Edgar now looks to join UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and Hawaiian superstar B.J. Penn as the only men to hold UFC championships in two different weight classes.

Now dubbed "UFC 153: Aldo vs. Edgar," the event takes place Oct. 13 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The evening's five-fight main card airs on pay-per-view.

Lamas should have got this shot; everybody knows that. He has beat more of the recent top 10 fighters than anybody in the division. The Aldo v Edgar fight is a great money fight, but it's not the right fight after two losses for Edgar and the "No immediate title shot" comment by Dana. Silly.

Maybe the best injury replacement ever. I like Koch but anyone being honest knows he in no way deserved a titel shot, he only got it because Zombie/Dustin P were booked and Hioki turned it down. He was the 4th choice.

Not a chance in hell Frankie was turning this fight down.He could have a machete sticking out of his leg at the time he got the call, and he would have taken the fight.Wouldn't dare turn down a fight so shortly after the whole 151 fiasco.

Am I the only one who thinks that the UFC is turning into a greasy promotion? This makes the second time in two weeks that two fighters, comming off of title losses have been given immediate shots at the title in a different weight class.White completely stepped over a number of guys who have been waiting their turn. They are too scared to tweet anything negative about it, for fear of being shown the door. That being said, I expect Aldo to dominate like he has been.He is undefeated for the past seven years, a former LW and has defeated elite guys like Brown and Faber with little effort.

Frankie Edgar already has his G status cemented in stone. He didn't need to do this. He is the kind of dude that would take a fight on an afternoons notice tho. I wanted to dislike Frankie but over time it became impossible. I can't think of a single fighter that has shown the heart he has and am thus rooting for him to beat Aldo.
