Gina Carano first chosen to star in female Expendables

As "Haywire" star Gina Carano continues to establish herself as an action heroine with an upcoming turn in "The Fast and the Furious 6," the former MMA fighter has become attached to topline an all-female riff on "The Expendables," which is being set up by Adi Shankar's banner 1984 Private Defense Contractors.

Shankar will produce for the shingle, which plans to fully finance the "Expendables"-inspired project.

Company remains in talks with several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre in addition to Carano, who director Steven Soderbergh hand-picked to star in "Haywire" alongside more experienced thesps such as Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum.

Dutch Southern, who wrote the 2010 Black List script "Hoof Harrington's Greatest Hits," was tapped to write the estrogen-powered action pic back in August, just as "The Expendables 2" was opening atop the box office.

"I don't know how I'm supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of 'The Expendables' without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba," said Shankar, whose shingle recently co-produced Joe Carnahan's "The Grey," Pete Travis' "Dredd 3D," Andrew Dominik's upcoming Brad Pitt-starrer "Killing Them Softly" and the viral Internet hit "The Punisher: Dirty Laundry," starring Thomas Jane.

In addition to a key role in "The Fast and the Furious 6," Carano is also attached to star in John Stockwell's "Taken"-esque action-thriller "In the Blood." She's repped by the Gersh Agency, The Syndicate and Ziffren Brittenham.

That's a bit of a stretch though, I mean no doubt she was famous and great to look at but action star? For Storm in the X-Men and ... ? How about Geena Davis then, she starred as a female assassin in The Long Kiss Goodnight but nothing else.Point is, there clearly are very few actresses who made a name for themselves beating up and killing people on screen. So a "reunion" film like this seems a little odd.

Not everyone in "The Expendables" was necessarily athletic. That being said, it would have much more draw if it was done 10-15 years ago when Linda Hamilton and Michelle Pfeiffer were still somewhat in their prime. Either way, Lucy Lawless (Xena, because I don't think anyone realizes) is still sexy. Get her, a few more people from the show, Uma, Lucy Liu, Mila Jovovich, etc. Have Linda Hamilton and Michelle Pfeiffer make appearances, then throw in Gina and a few other women mixed martial artists for action and you have a movie. As long as they don't let Gina try to act, I think it could have potential.

The fact that Carano is considered vital for this film - after starring in all of one action movie - shows you how weak this project is. Female action stars? Sigourney Weaver (Aliens), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill) and Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider, Salt) are the only interesting/famous ones that come to mind.

What other 80s/90s action female actresses are out there that would make this movie successful? Bridgette Neilsen? Michelle Yeoh?Since they already got a female fighter in Carano, Hollywood will probably just cast a bunch of 100-105 lbs models for the rest of the crew.
