Leben: I'm flat-out broke right now

by Brian Hemminger | source: mmamania.com

Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): You train a ton, that's pretty much all you've been doing the last several months. You train and you teach. You've mentioned that you're boring now. Is there any concern that you're training too much, perhaps overtraining?

Chris Leben: There is, definitely. I've had to remind myself, "Hey Chris, you've got three months until this fight." I've had this talk numerous times already with my coach with him reminding me, "Hey, you've got plenty of time. You need to slow down a bit." Again, I think that's just my personality of everything in excess and there's somewhat a bit of anxiety and nervous energy that I have going on right now and training is what helps me alleviate some of that. Absolutely but looking at it, if you're gonna be guilty of one or the other, overtraining or undertraining, I think overtraining is the way to go.

Brian Hemminger (MMAmania.com): In your chat with Ariel Helwani earlier this year, you mentioned that you experienced some financial difficulties following the Mark Munoz fight. Have you taken any life lessons from going through that?

Chris Leben: (laughs) Yeah, I'm flat-out broke right now. Being broke sucks. It's probably one of my biggest things where I just feel terrible. I feel terrible for having put my wife through so much and all because of the poor decisions that I've made. The year's been hard. The year's been a struggle. The only thing I can say is it's already happened. It's water under the bridge. The only thing I can do now is try to make sure it never happens again in the future and prepare for the future now.

Didn't pat Barry get to the point of eating ketchup and rice from a bad investment?A lot of these "struggling" UFC fighters got to where they are from bad investments...also living in California and Hawaii can put a strain on anyone's bank account.

LOL at blaming other people for your problems.Bad investments, buying shit you dont need, buying drugs, getting suspended and not being able to fight and make money so you have to eat up any money you had saved, how is that the UFC fault? and you go to any sport you see guys who made way way way more than Leben are in trouble.Didnt Warren Sapp just file for bankruptcy? YOu see other guys make smart investments. LOok at Kos, anyone see his house, cars, plane? I just watched UFC Ultimate Insider, did you see Stann's house? Some guys know what to do with money and some guys dont.

you also have to take into account the number of bad decisions made with investing money. bonnar for example started that t-shirt company which, correct me if i'm wrong here, doesn't seem to be doing so hot. lawlor i think owned a gym with seth, dont know if thats still around. leben bought into the icon gym (iirc) in the countdown to his fight with hendricks, they showed fitch with his brand new, custom made truck a lot of these guys (not all of them obviously) are making really good money, but just making poor investments with their money.  there is clearly a problem with lower-tier guys pay (IMO they should pay them a higher guaranteed amount but what do i know), but ask mccorkle about the undisclosed bonuses.  IIRC he said he was paid well over 2x what was contractually owed to him over his contract. Its easy to blame dana/zuffa for fighters going broke, but at the end of the day hes not forcing them to put their money into the things they are.

ADD Kyle Kingsbury to the struggling UFC fighters....interviewer: You won a fight bonus, 60,000, what did you do with all the moneyKingsbu: after paying the corner 20 percent, your management, and the tax man; .... that was my only fight in 2011. There's not much left, especially with costs of living, supplements, etc. I HAD TO GET A SECOND JOB, HELL , EVEN A THIRD JOB TO SURVIVE.SOURCE: http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=forum_framed.frame&thread=2067423&page=1&ts=41179This is getting ridiculous the amount of fighters that are getting shafted by DANER WHITE , just so he can own 20 luxury cars and by fancy guns and dumb shit. Pay the damn fighters!!!!

But Dana White can run around yelling about "We created 20 millionaires" There are 20 milionaires because of the UFC!You want to claim they are millionaires because of the UFC, then don't forget to claim the fighters ON WELFARE, ON KETCHUP AND RICE, WHO CAN'T AFFORD MEDICAL BILLS, Dont forget to claim all the BROKE UFC FIGHTERS TOO, DANER WHITE!

Listen man, I totally agree with you that fighters should be paid much more than they are now. But no matter how much you make, you can just as easily blow it. There are too many examples to even begin listing, but something like 78% of NFL players experience financial difficulties within 2 years of exiting the league. And theres always Tyson....You also seem to be brushing his addiction aside as "a dimebag or two and an 8 ball over the weekend". Im not sure if your trolling, or just misinformed. Leben had a full blown opiate addiction, which is in no way recreational. It can easily cost HUNDREDS daily, which is how often someone addicted to that sort of thing needs it; especially if hes so reliant on it that he cant get off long enough to clear his post fight drug test. Your so adamantly defending Leben and attacking Dana, when Leben himself said "I feel terrible for having put my wife through so much and all because of the poor decisions that I've made." You are right, its sad as hell, but Leben has made more than enough to support himself comfortably. I am good friends with a 'lower level' UFC fighter who makes far less, and lives comfortably with a wife and kids, its very do-able. Should he make more? Absolutely, the entire roster should. But at the end of the day, Leben has one person to blame for his financial problems, and hes already admitted that.
