Santos pulled from UFC 153 after positive hepatitis test

by Ariel Helwani | source: mmafighting.com

Heavyweight Geronimo Dos Santos was set to make his UFC debut Saturday night in his native Brazil, however, a pre-fight drug test forced him off the card and subsequently put his MMA career in jeopardy.

According to dos Santos' manager Alex Davis, the Brazilian big man tested positive for Hepatitis B last week during a routine pre-fight blood test administered by the UFC, who, since there is no athletic commission in Brazil, tested all the UFC 153 fighters. The news was first reported by Guilherme Cruz of Tatame.com and Marc Ratner, the UFC's VP of regulatory affairs, confirmed it on Thursday.

According to PubMed Health, Hepatitis B is caused by irritation and swelling of the liver due to infection. Davis said dos Santos will need to undergo chemotherapy to rid himself of the disease, but since the treatment is very expensive, he didn't know when dos Santos would start doing it. So for now, the Brazilian heavyweight's UFC career has been put on hold.

I just took a test this morning at the free clinic for hepatitis. I kicked ass too. I got an A, two B's, and a C.         Seriously though this news sucks if true.

I live in the same city as Dos Santos and Machida, didnt hear anything new about his case yet, also used to train bjj at the same Gym, Dude is a Monster, and was very motivated, everybody was helping with supplements, gear and etc. His finnacial situation isnt good at all, that just sucked.

Just to clarify somethings about hepatitis. You can get Hep B and C from sexual contact, and exposition to contaminated blood ( transfusions, syringes, tatoos and etc...) when contracted at an adult age HeP C tenda to cronificate on 90% of the cases while B dies it on up to 5% of the times. Once its cronic it can evolve to cirrhosis and Cancer ( hep b can bypass the cirrhosis state directly to cancer) Hep B most of the times is harder to negativate completlly but it can be done. And of course alcohool can lead to acute hepatitis and evolve all the way to cancer, hepatitis can be caused by anything that damages your liver cells. The letters only designate the types of virus that can lead to such damage: A, B, C, D and E.
