Gross: Five thoughts on Jones-Sonnen

by Josh Gross | source: espn.com

I don't like the fight

Hey, judging by fans on Twitter, I'm not the only one. True enough, some people view the matchup as great. I understand why. Sonnen is a showman. The TUF entertainment factor will be turned up to 10. For Jones, rehabbing during the taping of the reality show and desiring to close the chapter by putting Sonnen in his place is compelling stuff.

Plenty to look forward to, fine.

Here's why none of it matters: There are better tests out there for Jones, all of whom are unquestionably more deserving than Sonnen at 205 pounds.

Risk of a blowout

More likely, Sonnen won't get any offense off. His takedowns will be denied, probably a hair more graceful than Michael Bisping did. He crumbles on the end of Jones' reach.

And, that's that. The TV show. The talk. The hype. And that's that.

This event will propel the TRT discussion

Things of intrigue

Head games.

Sonnen is thought to be masterful at this, and it looks as though Jones will play on the same battlefield. Their conference call earlier in the week offered plenty of examples.

"The Ultimate Fighter" is worth discussing only when it churns out contender-level prospects. Otherwise, in my eyes at least, it's not much different than Golf Channel's "The Big Break."

One thing can save the show, make it meaningful and prompt viewers to tune in: fighters who seem to have the potential to become contenders someday.

Absent that, the show is just a show. And with all this MMA on the air, it's not as if people are clamoring to watch low- to mid-tier fighting on a regular basis, even if it's encased in the Octagon.

Not a fucking chance, this is a piece of shit fight, and will remain a piece of shit fight regardless of how much Sonnen runs his mouth.

look i am a anderson fan bigtime ,and i will never forget how much chael amped that first fight , i was sitting with my mate who hates andy, and i will never forget how devastated i was watching chael smash anderson, but at the same time i was rooting for cheal just cuase he was doing what he said he coulhd do, now i know the rematch might of just confirmed anderson was injured with a bad rib ,but i really dont see bones finishing chael that easy , look what anderson did to vitor ? and look vitor nearly beat jones , i guess this may be jones hardest fight , do i think jones will win yes, but not easily

You made a lot of great points (especially about TUF,Vitor,Rashad and entertainment) so i voted you up.   But i still fundamentally disagree with you on the most important point. It simply would not be a good fight. And since Sonnen jumped over a lot more deserving competition to get this that would have been the only legitimate excuse to make if you want MMA to be taken seriously AS A SPORT.   Now i am a big Sonnen fan (both as a fighter and as an entertainer). I am also a big Zuffa and Dana White fan but saying this is about anything else then saving the ultimate fighter in the States and by extention their already in a slump marriage with Fox is absolute BS. I know, even thoughtaking into account that Zuffa is a privately held company, Dana could never admit this but the wise move would to stay quit about this instead of flat out denying it.   It might be good for the short term results of Zuffa, the UFC, Sonnen's career,TUF entertainment value and rating and the Fox UFC relationship. It might even prove suprisingly beneficial for our personal ''fun'' meter (i do think, even if the fight will be bad, the banter will make up for things) but it draws the UFC into WWF territory. And even though i admirer the athletic ability of some the guys making a living down their that is generally not the direction i want to see MMA go as a sport. So it will not be good for MMA in the long term at all.

There is no what if, the second Chael takes any sort of punishment he'll be mentally broke and find a way out of the fight taking the least damage possible

It will be a fun buildup, about it. Got me thinking... Chael beats who in the top of 205? How would he do against, Rashad, Guff, Texiera, Davis, Shogun?Would Chael beat Bader?Thoughts?

I am not as grossed out by this fight as Josh. But, I do think that Jones next fight should be Machida. I don't know of any other fighter that is currently at 205 that is as deserving as the pee pee drinker. I will still watch Jones/Sonnen and hope for an upset, but it wasn't the fight that should have been made imo.

Everybody fuckin relax. This is a reward fight for sonnen. Does everyone forget that jones bitched out on this fight and fuked an entire UFC card months ealier. If Jones is as good as everyone says he is, he should beat sonnen no problem. So dont fukin worry bitches. Just relax and be happy that there will finally be an entertaining TUF. This season has been horseshit.
