UFC 153 best Brazil PPV buys to date

by Dave Meltzer | source: mmafighting.com

Industry estimates have ranged from 340,000 to 410,000 buys from various sources, for the show headlined by Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar. This would make it the most successful of the four events thus far held in Brazil, and the numbers may not even wind up too far off what UFC 152 did, for a show in Toronto headlined by Jon Jones vs. Vitor Belfort for the light heavyweight title.

A show in Toronto has a huge advantage marketability wise over a show in Brazil, because of the extensive Canadian media coverage it will get, which leads to a major difference in buys from that country. A show from Brazil is not going to have the level of U.S. media coverage going in, nor get the local market boost of having a show in the city since the show aired on network television instead of pay-per-view in Brazil.

While not close to the Silva vs. Chael Sonnen number from July, which did an estimated 925,000 buys, there were no expectations of doing half that going in. The number was far greater than the original show would have done with Jose Aldo as the headliner, and beat the company's budgeted projections for the match.

These numbers were drawn from a show without a championship match, although Silva right now probably ranks behind only Georges St-Pierre as the company's best drawing champion. More importantly, Silva was able to pull the number with Bonnar, who had never main evented on pay-per-view and came in with no proven drawing power.

At this point I think even Jones is a better ppv draw overall than Anderson. If there's no rival to hype the fight he can't seem to draw the interest outside of Brazil you would expect from someone with his accomplishments.

UFC 134 which had anderson/okami,  big nog/Shuab, Shogun/Forrest didnt even do as well.  The numbers are good but you have to wonder how the p4p best cant pull 700k buys on his own whereas pacman and mayweather do over a million... heck, 2 mexicans who just came on the seen in boxing just pulled over 400k buys.  The fact that zuffa cant make Anderson a ppv draw on his own is a failure.

Exactly. This card had a ton of name recognition and lots of great match-ups, and it just pulled 350K? Should have been north of 500K.

600k is pretty low for gsp, but he has been gone a long time so it's understandable. I think he actually shouldn't have too much pressure on himself aside from just the belt.He hasn't fought for a long time so he will probably be happy to just be out there. If he wins he's back and has potential for a ton of money against Silva. If he loses he gets a very winnable big money fight against Diaz to get him back on track.

The PPV buys are really beside the point. Go look at how many households in Brazil watched that fight live... it is mind blowing. It may have been for free, but it is still an awesome benchmark for the UFC and solidifies its growth in the region.

what is so important about the PPV views? The UFC doesn't even care to mention them in their releases.
