Coach: The way to beat GSP is to hurt him

Carlos Condit’s trainer Mike Winkeljohn recently appeared on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Rewind” show, and talked Condit's fight vs. Georges St-Pierre at UFC 154 on Nov. 17 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

“Georges is the best in the world at what he does, but at the same time, we know what he does,” said Winklejohn. “He does that, and hardly anybody’s been able really to stop it, but with that being said, Carlos has got something for him. Every time he wants to shoot in, we want to not give him the proper distance. We want to not be there when he does shoot, but when he does, we want to have something there for him.”

“He definitely followed my game plan for Nick Diaz to a T, but with that being said, it’s different with Georges. Nick comes back from the dead. I think Carlos can unload on Georges and do damage early, and that will pay benefits as we go on … . You will see a different fight that way. The way to fight Georges is not to back away and touch him because he’s going to eventually take you down and ride out a decision that way and he could finish you. Georges is great in many different positions, but the way to beat Georges is to hurt him.”

“That’s what this fight is going to come down to: Carlos can strike from so many places. He can hurt you in so many ways. What people have forgotten is that early in Carlos’ career, he was tapping people out left and right. Carlos is great with his submissions and working on them daily.”

“(GSP) wants to time Carlos’ footwork to come forward and shoot on Carlos,” Winkeljohn said. “There’s no doubt about it. He’s got to close the gap. Carlos is longer -- we know that, so that’s what we’re looking for. Things are going to happen when one of the two guys close the gap.”

I am concerned the Condit camp is going to try and employ their jab and jog again. It is hard to take someone down if they constantly disengage and Jacksons has to know that Condit will get taken down if he tries to duke it out with GSP. Even if you take away GSP's takedown threat, I cannot see Condit winning a pure standup fight without some type of tactic. I hope I am wrong but I think we may see another jab/jog type of fight from NBK.

Condit was getting tossed all over the place back in the WEC by an undersized Judo guy. Sure he has improved since those days but the fact is GSP is .. well GSP. He doesn't need to shoot to take you down. He can trip/throw from the clinch or in a scramble etc. No one does it better, not even the most highly decorated wrestlers turned fighter out there. Condit will be on his back when GSP feels like putting him there.I understand what they mean about hurting him and then pursuing it but I don't think Condit will be able to put GSP on queer street and finish him off

Voted up sir.  It's what I was worried about after CC/Diaz.  I was given new hope when it didn't work out for Guida though.   I think refs need to be made aware of timidity and how to deal with it.  It's in the rules already, and might become an issue the higher the stakes get, so it should be nipped in the bud.

If GSP has cage rust or otherwise can't stand with Condit, he'll just take him down and man hump him to a win. Sure Condit has sold bjj but the odds are he wont be able to pull off a sub from bottom. If he plans to Starns his way to victory I just don't see it happening. Didn't Diaz take Condit down? I just can't see Condit who is at this point massively overrated stuffing GSP and outstriking him. He's going to have to get lucky to beat GSP and I think this could be a rather boring fight.

Jake eye poked him, he never hurt him with any legal hitSerra getting the ko was the only time GSP has ever been finished with strikes and that was a green GSP who was still in his mid 20s. People forget how young and green he was because he got thrown to the wolves and whipped everybody at such a young age. He only lost about 2 rounds in the last 5 years since that fight. You can't compare GSP/Hardy with Condit and Hardy, COndit was a tenth of a second from being knocked the fuck out, his punch just landed a tad bit sooner. GSP was never in trouble against Hardy. Also if you want to play that game, look at Shields/Condit and GSP/Condit. Shields was decisively against Condit, Shields barely won a round against GSP

i think winklejohn is right. the reason why everyone believes you need to make it a "dogfight" with gsp is because that is probably the most effective way to beat him. just no one has been skilled enough to pull off that strategy yet. i'm also not 100% convinced this is actually what condit is going to try to docondit is probably the most intelligent fighter gsp has fought, and probably one of the best/fastest strikers also. that and his 19/20 month layoff come the time of the fight means it could be a very tough bout. i think if gsp fights how he did pre-knee there isn't going to be any trouble timing his takedowns but i can easily see him struggling if this "ringrust" stuff is realGORDON BOMBAY FOR THE WIN
