Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana use following his win over Takanori Gomi in 2007, leading to the win being voided, among other sanctions. He tested positive for marijuana again following a unanimous decision loss vs. Carlos Condit, and was suspended for a year.
During discussion of the subject, Kizer referenced Diaz having drunk 24 bottles of water in an attempt to mask the use. The claim was derided by Diaz's manager, trainer, and mentor Cesar Gracie.
However, in an interview with MiddleEasy, Kizer provided further details.
Keith Kizer doesn't seem remotely fazed by accusations that the Nevada State Athletic Commission is picking on UFC welterweight Nick Diaz.
"(That story) came from (Nick Diaz) drinking a lot of water afterwards," said Kizer.
"Those water bottles were 8-ounce bottles, so 24 bottles is about a gallon-and-a-half if my math is right. I saw what he drank. And we know why. And you can play games about it if you want, but we know why."
Kizer also said he was open to communication with Diaz and his camp, and was waiting for a phone call.
"(Cesar Gracie) called me during the case and said, 'Look, I want to sit with you. Nick and I want to sit down with you.' I said, 'Look, Cesar, you gotta call Ross Goodman. He's the attorney. You gotta go through him.' We're happy to do that, we've offered it several times to Ross. (Cesar) said 'I will call Ross right away.'
"We never heard back from him after that. I don't know what the conversation was between him and Ross, but we've always a good relationship. I expect to have a good one with Cesar in the future."
Kizer also said that given a legitimate medical condition and a physician approving the paperwork, the NSAC would look at a Therapeutic Use Exemption for marijuana.
The NSAC filed a legal brief last month in reference to a case Diaz's camp is bringing, and expects to go before a judge next month.
Diaz's one year suspension ends February 3, 2013; at that point he is free to reapply for a license to fight.
