Remembering the TapouT series

In his lastest Underground Blog, he remembers the Tapout television series.

originally airing on Versus from June 2007 to October 2008, the TapouT television series’ two seasons and twenty total episodes should be remembered as more than another reality show.  Today the show serves as an MMA historical artifact, a glimpse into the recent past when many of MMA’s current stars were still unknown. The show had plenty of hijinks, and some behind the scenes drama, between the three faces of the TapouT clothing brand, Charles “Mask” Lewis, Dan “Punkass” Caldwell, and Tim “Skyskrape” Katz.  But it also gave the audience glimpses into the fighters’ personal lives, their training and preparation, and their actual fights.  Though some episodes of the show featured fighters who peaked not long after, other episodes featured fighters that still continue to succeed.  Below are some of the most successful fighters from the TapouT show, and a summary of how their careers have evolved since then.

Julie Kedzie – Featured in episode 16, Kedzie was one of the Greg Jackson’s fighters that the TapouT crew focused on during their visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Her fight on the show was a first round submission win over Angela Hayes, at Battlequest 8, in Denver, Colorado.  Since that April 2008 bout, Kedzie has gone 4-4.  Though her last two fights were both losses, they were on Strikeforce cards and helped to make Kedzie one of the better known women’s MMA fighters.

John Dodson – Dodson was the other fighter, along with Julie Kedzie, featured in episode 16.  His fight on the show, a first round TKO over Vern Baca, also took place at Battlequest 8.  Since April 2008, Dodson has a record of 7-2.  Dodson went on to be a participant in The Ultimate Fighter, season 14.  He ultimately won the bantamweight title fight, at the TUF 14 finale, in December 2011, with a first round TKO over T.J. Dillashaw.  After that, Dodson began competing at flyweight, and he is now 2-0 in the UFC in that weight class.  Dodson is expected to face current UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, to compete for the belt, in the main event of UFC on FOX 6, in January 2013.

Glover Teixeira – Teixeira was one of two fighters featured in episode 11, when the TapouT crew visited John Hackleman’s The Pit, in San Luis Obispo, California.  In Teixeira’s fight on the show, he knocked out Jorge Oliveira just five seconds into the first round, at Palace Fighting Championship 6, in Lemoore, California.  Since that January 2008 bout, Teixeira is undefeated, with a 13-0 record.  He is now 19-2 overall, with 17 stoppage wins.  Teixeira currently fights for the UFC, where the light heavyweight has a 2-0 record.  He is expected to face former UFC Champion, Quinton Jackson, at UFC on FOX 6, in January 2013.

Donald Cerrone – The TapouT Crew ran into Cerrone, in Colorado, back in episode 4.  They sponsored Cerrone in his sixth professional bout, a first round submission win over Anthony Njokuani, at Ring of Fire 29, in April 2007.  Cerrone has gone on to become one of the most popular and exciting MMA fighters.  Since the show, he has a record of 13-4, with one no-contest.  Six of those wins came when Cerrone was a top lightweight fighter in the WEC.  Now Cerrone is one of the best UFC lightweights, amassing a 6-1 UFC record since the two promotions merged at the beginning of 2011.  Like TapouT show alumni Teixeira and Dodson, Cerrone’s next fight is expected to occur at UFC on FOX 6, in January 2013.  Cerrone is scheduled to face Anthony Pettis in a long-awaited fight between two of the division’s top contenders.

Pat Curran – Curran, featured in episode 17, was the focus of the episode as the TapouT crew visited his cousin and trainer, Jeff Curran’s, Crystal Lake, Illinois, gym.  Pat Curran’s fight on the show was only his second professional bout.  He defeated Lazar Stojadinovic, via unanimous decision, at XFO 23 in Lakemoor, Illinois.  Since that April 2008 bout, Curran has gone 15-4.  He currently fights for Bellator, and he has gone 8-1 in the promotion.  His only loss was by unanimous decision, in a lightweight championship match, against the former champion, Eddie Alvarez, in April 2011.  Curran won both the Bellator 2010 lightweight tournament and the Bellator 2011 featherweight tournament.  Then, in his most recent fight, in March 2012, Curran knocked out former champion, Joe Warren, to become the current Bellator featherweight champ.

Johny Hendricks – Hendricks was one of two fighters featured in episode 14, when the TapouT crew visited Marc Laimon’s Cobra Kai, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Hendricks’ fight on the show was his third professional bout.  It was a first round submission win over Richard Gamble at Xtreme Fighting League 1, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Since that fight in March 2008, Hendricks has gone 10-1.  His overall record is 13-1, with a 2-0 record in the WEC, and an 8-1 record in the UFC.  Hendricks is currently on a four-fight win streak and he’ll be facing Martin Kampmann, in a welterweight number-one contender match, as the co-main event of UFC 154, on November 17th, in Montreal.

It's amazing.. even back then knowing the MMA game... I didn't think many of those guys had what it takes to make the WEC, UFC, or the big show in general. I was WRONG! My Gawd... Pat Curran! Cowboy! Page! The list goes on and on. I seriously thought many of those guys were blessed to have such a generous company Tapout (MASK) behind them like they did for thousands of fighters... But some of those kids really delivered! COW-BOY! COW-BOYYY!!!!

Loved the one they did on Albert "Always Bad" Manners. That kid could have been something... Too much partying and too many stints in jail.

What about when Damacio Page was on there - and demolished some dude who must have had 18 inches in reach on him? I don't think I was ever so shocked at how a fight went in my life; the Doug Marshall-Justin McElfresh fight in the WEC is the only other one I can think of that even comes close.

IIRC... Didn't Punkass like Sunshine's opponent cause he had a Tapout tattoo on his back? I remember that episode. Sunshine seemed so innocent.

I liked the show but thought they majorly disrespected Dan Lauzon.  Didn't Joe come on here and speak on the topic as well?  My memory isn't what it used to be.
