Costumed MMA fighter Phoenix Jones does mutual combat on Seattle street

source: The Underground Blog

To the uninitiated, MMA can look a little weird.

To the uninitiated, the video below looks like weird took peyote - a man in a superhero outfit on the streets of a major American city uses MMA techniques on a drunk, as the police watch on.

The story of what happened follows the video.

Fight starts at 6:40 mark.

Under American law, you do not have to be a law enforcement officer to enforce the law. Although each state can modify the rules of engagement, under US law a private citizen has the right to use reasonable force to prevent a criminal act, or even detain suspected criminals until proper law enforcement personnel can assume custody.

Citizens also have the right to dress up as superheros, should they have a mind to.

An experience MMA fighter named Ben Fodor assumes the costumed character of Phoenix Jones, and leads a Seattle, Washington based citizen patrol group who call themselves the Rain City Superhero Movement.

The group documents their activities with a video camera, calls 911 when they see a crime in progress, and then act legally.

In the video Phoenix Jones having witnessed a drunk attacking a car, steps in to stop it. The drunk explains that not being a police officer there is nothing he can do about it.

As it turns out, that is not the case.

Eventually the police turn up and after the drunk directs racial slurs at the group, they fight.

Under Washington State law, as long as both participants are willing, it is legal to engage in "mutual combat."

On the way home Phoenix was contacted by the police who said the original victims of the drunk would like to press charges. Phoenix agreed to give them the video of their assault.

Phoenix wants to remind you that while this video is funny, entertaining, and justified, it is most importantly legal: Seattle Municipal Code 12A.06.025.

And a little weird.

Great video! I'm impressed with Fodor's restraint. The dude with the phone needed an ass-kicking bigtime. I just hope nothing bad or permanent happens to Ben.I live in Ontario and we've always had a "mutual combat" law. I think it's the same throughout Canada. Most people don't know about it and cops definitely don't advertise it. My buddy is a cop and he's seen a few guys who come out on the losing end try to press charges on the winer. He enjoys telling them they can't. Lol! As the saying goes, "You mess with the bull, you get the horns." Or, in this case, "You mess with the Phoenix, you get burned."

How was that a cheap shot? He punched him. I also want to reiterate something that I'm constantly having to tell people on these sites, and out in public, that is that the guys that do mma for the most part are tougher than you think and can hold their own in a street fight. People are constanly saying they aren't great athletes, and maybe they aren't great at some of the sports we consider to be run by athletes but it takes a different sent of skills and a different kind of of conditioning. Both my older brothers were way better athletes than me, They excelled at basketball, football, and whatever. I wrestled in high school and that was about it. I took them to my gym the other day and was destroying them.

That was awesome but isn't it kind of hypocritical that Pheonix Jones goes around breaking up fights and macing people who are most likely engaging in mutual combat themselves, but then he goes ahead and agrees to a street fight?

The hero Seattle deserves. Drunk assholes like that think they run the streets at night, just because they can leg it before the police arrive. Glad this dude is knocking some sense into them. It'll be a damn shame when he gets shot though.

Apparently that suit he wears is custom made and bullet proof, weighing 50lbs.  He walks around in that thing all night.  Pretty agile with it weighing him down.

i was halfway kidding. they arent gay especially when they are fucking textbook heavy shots like that. lead leg has its place too but they usually arent for damage as much as distance control/ setting up.
