Chad Mendes vs. Manny Gamburyan official for UFC 157

Not yet a week after his most recent victory, Chad Mendes already has his next assignment.

Mendes (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) will meet Manny Gamburyan (12-7 MMA, 3-5 UFC) at UFC 157 in February. UFC officials on Thursday announced the fight booking, saying that verbal agreements are in place for the bout.

Mendes just this past week notched a knockout of Benson Henderson training partner Yaotzin Meza at UFC on FX 6 in Australia. That was a short-notice opponent for him after Hacran Dias had to pull out the week prior to the fight.

The win was the second straight quick stoppage victory for the Team Alpha Male product, who in July at UFC 148 stopped Cody McKenzie with a body punch just 31 seconds into the fight. That puts him on a two-fight win streak after suffering the first setback of his career, which came this past January in a featherweight title fight against champ Jose Aldo at UFC 142 in Aldo's native Brazil. In that bout, Aldo landed a knee that led to a knockout with just one second left on the clock in the first round.

Dana's money is on Aldo to win, and that's the smart bet. If Chad wins this bout, I'm sure he'll be one fight away from another title shot. If not, oh well, he had his shot. Let other's that are at the top get their chance to dethrone the champion.

That's not going to matter when Frankie beats him, though. While it's a terrible matchup, I'm glad they're giving Mendes a chance to shine and win some more casual fans with these quick, easy KOs.

These guys need to make money to live. I don't blame them for taking any fights offered.

Guys, they have contenders at 145 waiting in line already, so why would they match them up with Mendes to potentially be beaten? They want new opponents for Aldo, not rematches.

This...   They are either ''protecting him'' or just not giving him the match-ups he deserves. Manny is a decent fighter but he does not have any business of being in the cage with Mendes. I do not understand this match up at all. It shows that UFC obviously does not want to be treated like a regular professional sport because matchup between top five in the respected weightclasses are getting sparser by the minute.

Gotta get him back to that title shot!
