Chandler submits Hawn, defends Bellator lightweight title

The undefeated Alliance MMA fighter improved to 11-0 on Thursday night with a successful defense of his Bellator lightweight title. Chandler submitted Rick Hawn with a rear-naked choke at 3:07 of the second round of their fight at the Bren Events Center on the campus of Cal-Irvine.

Chandler set the tone in the first round by taking down the 2004 Olympic judoka from Dracut, Mass., and controlling most of the round from that position. Hawn looked to avoid a knee to the head while getting back to his feet late in the round by keep a hand on the mat, but he ate a dozen knees to the thigh and torso instead.

Late in the first round, Hawn (14-2) tagged Chandler with a powerful shot, leaving open the idea the tide could turn in the second.

Instead, Chandler, a former NCAA wrestling All-American at Missouri, ramped up the intensity, using a pair of slams to soften him up and set up the finishing rear-naked choke.

Just watched the fight. Damn, that was domination. And I expected Hawn to roll right through him too.

Rick worked hard on his wrestling this camp. Most of the Canadian international wrestlers train at the montreal wrestling club and come to Tri-star as well to help. Rick worked a lot with 184 Canadian national champ Matt miller. I spent a week up there in dec. Rick took wrestling serious this camp .

"There were no judo throws that let Chandler get to his back... He got manhandled and taken down. He got on all 4s to stand and was manhandled again...The final time that he tried to get to his feet, the RNC."What I was referring to was the sequence in the gif that lead to the RNC where Hawn "got manhandled and taken down. He got on all 4s to stand and was manhandled again...The final time that he tried to get to his feet, the RNC." Excluding the RNC, that is wreslting 101, esp where Chandler got behind Hawn against the cage and where he picked him up and tossed him down.In judo, you do not practise stuff like that, it does not happen in competition, you cant pick someone up from behind like that, you get no points and there is no td control score like wrestling. Its similar to Barnett suplexing Yoshida. Again, i know Hawn has had many fights now and trains at Tristar but its not just about typical judo throws, its about the position/control battle that is the bread and butter of wreslting and something not trained in judo.

There were no judo throws that let Chandler get to his back... He got manhandled and taken down. He got on all 4s to stand and was manhandled again...The final time that he tried to get to his feet, the RNC.The both had pretty wide stances in the standup.. Chandler seemed to be able to shoot in pretty quick. Even from static situations Chandler was just much stronger and overpowering.

didnt see the fight, as a judo guy wanted hawn to do well....i know hawns been in mma for a while and trains at tristar but cant help but think that a sequence like the gif shows just is not judo's bread and butter and thats where some judo guys may be vulnerable. on the flip, its where guys like Okami and Stun Gun have been impressive in adapting their judo into the more wrestling centric grappling in the dog fights for control and tds rather than clean throws to the back and restarts anytime a wrestling type sequence begins.

As a local, I really wanted Hawn. The good thing is that the last time I heard Chandler interviewed, he was prob the classiest prof athlete that I've ever heard and mma could do with a lot more guys like him.
