UFC to introduce official ranking system

Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans, as well as the current fighters on the roster, might now get a better idea of the contender pecking order with news that UFC has teamed up with FightMetric to establish an official ranking system.

"UFC Fighter Rankings are a great tool for new and existing fans alike to learn and better keep up with the fast pace of the UFC," said UFC President Dana White in a press release. "We always look for opportunities to engage fans and media, allowing them to connect and voice their opinions, and this just one more way of doing that."

According to the release, FightMetric will poll opinions from about 90 MMA media members worldwide. Rankings -- by division and pound-for-pound -- will be updated after each event, with media members voting immediately after they conclude. Fight fans will be able to see the up-to-date rankings, which will be integrated into upcoming live broadcasts, about 24 hours later on UFC.com.

I question the integrity of any media member who agrees to participate in the vote.  These aren't legitimate rankings--these are UFC contracted fighters only. Of course, the UFC has through acquisition acquired virtually all top ten ranked fighters in all weight classes, but that isn't the point.

No I had a conversation with him on beatdown that started on twitter and that's what he told me, I even linked him a interview with Big John McCarthy about how they substituted the word damage for the word affective striking because the ufc didn't feel they would be able to be sanctioned. His reply was that John McCarthy was not the only individual involved in writing the judging criteria. He didn't even address the topic other that some childish remark.

Cannot compare Aldo/Edgar. Edgar is a former champ, only lost to the current champ. He is not outside the top 5 in a weight class down. Hardy came into the title fight 23-6 and 4-0 in the UFC, also not outside of the top 5 at the time.

You're probably right. Just something I noticed, but more than likely a coincidence.

while you make valid points, i can think of a handful.. jones/sonnen, gsp/hardy, edgar/aldo, not to mention how many times florian got an immediate title shot in i cant remember how many divisions now when he kept stepping down in weight. The overall it will always be in the hands of what dana feels will sell the best for him. So to me while it is cool to have a UFC ranking system, if dana doesnt follow it then it is just fluff to try and show legitimacy.

*waits for the next example of a #2 or #3 in one division and then getting a title shot in the division above after having not fought in the higher division for like 6 years* Rankings: They're cool to look at but they're just eye candy and we're not going to use them at all. Leave it to the UFC fuck up a ranking system.
