Belfort on TRT at UFC on FX 7

Prior to his successful fight with Michael Bisping at UFC on FX 7 in Sao Paulo on Jan 19, Vitor Belfort sat down with ESPN's Brett Okamoto for a wide-ranging interview, that included whether or not Belfort had received a Therapeutic Use Exemption for Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

"Have you ever applied for TRT or would you consider it?" asked Okamoto.

Belfort's reply was guarded.

"If a question is private, I have the choice to answer or not," said Belfort. "If I make it public, it’s not private anymore. If I want to say something private I will say it, but I keep to myself and I respect the laws of the sport. Whatever the organization, whatever the law -- they know what to do. This is too controversial, why am I going to say something that doesn’t accomplish anything? If it’s legal, they know what to do. If it’s legal, there’s nothing to say about it. It’s legal."

Now MMAJunkie's John Morgan is reporting what the vast majority of fans had assumed.

Additionally, Vitor Belfort was on TRT for the fight.

Belfort's has a troubled history with use of Performance Enhancing Drugs.

Belfort tested positive to a PED Folowing a unanimous decision loss to Dan Henderson at Pride 32 on October 21, 2006. The Japanese based promotion helf the event at the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada; regulated by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NSAC).

At a hearing on December 21, 2006 Belfort was suspended for nine months, from that date, meaning he was out until August 21, 2007. However, Belfort flouted the suspension, fighting during that time period in the United Kingdom, which lacks a regulatory body.

Belfort was relicensed in 2008 by the California State Athletic Commission, and eventually was relicensed by the NSAC as well.

The UFC released an official statement today.

"To dispel rumors that have been circulated, Zuffa wishes to clarify that Vitor Belfort's drug test results were negative and did not indicate the presence of any performance enhancing drugs.

"Belfort has been on a medically approved testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) regimen under the supervision of a medical doctor from the State of Nevada, after being diagnosed with hypogonadism, or low testosterone. The purpose of a medically administered TRT regimen is to allow patients with hypogonadism to maintain testosterone levels within a range that is normal for an adult male."
