White: No plans to strip Cruz of title unless he retires

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has not fought since November of 2011. Although he recently underwent knee surgery, and his return is indefinite, the UFC has no intention of stripping him of his belt.

"If he starts training again and gets another injury that's going to take him out for a year – and I hate to even say this about the kid since he's a really good kid – but he should seriously probably look at retiring," said UFC president Dana White. "But I'm not taking something like [the title] from somebody."

"The way that it works in the fight business is you beat the man who beat the man. Obviously, though, if he had to retire, then [the interim titleholder] would automatically become the champion."

Win the belt, keep getting injured... Eventually you're an undefeated UFC champion boasting a 5 year belt reign, win!

A fighter is never going to drop the belt. That would be insane, you make way more money defending the belt and at the end of the day this sport is about money.

Stupid. The UFC is doing this because they know they can promote an 'undisputed super-fight' for the title when he returns. But they would be better off stripping him and being able to promote Barao as champion now, rather than crappy 'interim' title defences. This would also allow Cruz to a have a tune-up. Not a smart idea to fight Barao straight away after that long.Remember, Mir got destroyed by Marcio Cruz in his return fight from the accident.

Fair enough. I think Edgar is an all time great, much the same way I feel about Penn. Yes they lost a few but they put it all on the line against the best of the best in a weight class they physically shouldn't have been in. You can't really count them out no matter how overmatched. I think a guy like that vs a long time champ is a super fight too.

It's not that I think less of Edgar.  Maybe we just have different definitions of a superfight.  IMO, it's 2 long term, dominant and current champs.  Aldo/Edgar and Aldo/Pettis are just 2 awesome fights, not superfights.

Haha no I didn't. Apparently you don't think much of Edgar. I do. So do a lot of others. Oh well.

No, it was a former champ on a 2 fight losing streak dropping weight.  A superfight would be GSP/Anderson or Anderson/Jones and that's about it.  A fighter switching a weight class does not make a superfight.  Let me guess.  You also thought Couture/Tim Sylvia was a superfight?

If you can't defend your title for two years, you shouldn't have it IMO.

Aldo/Edgar wasn't a superfight?    You're an idiot and I don't need Dana White to tell me that or anything else.
