Not a lot of excuses for bad judging at UFC

"Big" John McCarthy is the face of MMA officiating, and he does always like what he sees.

"Overall it is better now than it was in the past, by far," McCarthy said on Monday's stacked edition of The MMA Hour. "But the problem is, we have so many more shows going on. There's a lot of things that are happening. There's some mistakes being made.

"When it comes to the judging, the biggest thing is, judging by nature is subjective. You look at a fight and you have a guy that throws a bunch of punches. One judge -- we'll say you -- is looking at it, and you're giving him credit, saying, ‘Wow, he's really active.' While I'm looking at it saying, ‘He's not connecting.'

"When you're looking at the UFC, there's not a whole lot of excuses. You've got a monitor in front of you, so [even] when you can't see, [you can still see].

"That monitor gives them the ability to see a fight from a variety of angles, not just from the one they're sitting at. And so there's not a lot of excuses to say, well, I didn't see that when it comes to the UFC."

One place you rarely see McCarthy is in the UFC, something he attributes a long-standing feud with Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer.

"I thought he was putting some people in positions to judge fights that didn't understand actually what the fighters were doing, and that's wrong," said McCarthy. "I said that and I stood by it. He got mad, and from that he has never licensed me again. And that's okay. That's his choice. I'm not going to cry about it and worry about it."

McCarthy apologized publicly to Kizer and three years ago resubmitted his application for licensure. Not surprisingly, he hasn't heard back, other than a note stating that his "application will stay on file."

Kizer is as corrupt as they come. A complete scumbag. Kudos to big john for keeping his composure all these years.

Why don’t you guys bomb Dana’s twitter with petition for Kizer to do something about it? Perhaps with link to the article?   I assume we don’t have access to Kizer directly via twitter or email?

I'm guessing there's a lot of payola and payoffs for the cushy judging positions.  It's not as easy as saying someone sucks and you kick them off.  Lol, one of the things I learned from the tv show The Wire is that by the time you get to anywhere with power you owe like a jillion people who helped you get there even if your intentions are good.  When your intentiontions aren't good... well...

Kirik, will you now stop supporting Kizer?  Is it obvious yet that he's a pathetic baby who doesn't care about fixing the glaring officiating problems?

All fights should be rewatched by a large panel of independant judges to determine over time the judges who fall into categories where they are frequently the only one among a panel of say 20 people that thinks a certain way. Just like the Tomato Meter on Rotten tomatoes expresses a percentage of how often a critic or fan agrees with the overall consensus.  If a fight is close and can go either way then the 20 independants will reflect that and if a fight is one sided and a judge still gives it to the clear loser (like Adalaide Byrd does) then it will reflect it also and be weighted and lower a judges credibility rating and should in turn either mean they need more training or find a new job.

What? Kizer and the NSCA do a poor job of overseeing the rules/scoring in MMA? That's news to me!Taking one look at the poor rules/scoring and the terrible judges that think takedown/on top = auto win, anyone can see that they do a poor job. Kizer's not going to change anything unless his jobs in danger though. Which it wont be.

Idk the situation (will watch vid in a minute) and I certainly never mean to bash being that Kizer has been in the commission game forever but if 'Personal Differences' are proven to make it that far into such an important organization's decisions then the repeated complaints shouldn't be taken as suprising or personal towards anyone....especially a ref since ufc fuckin 1. Not like we need that guy with the given issues in MMA

Hey Kizer, I know you read this forum.Stop being a bitch! Stop holding the sport back for whatever reason your mind has conjured. Doing something such as fucking with Johns career is disgusting and it will taint your legacy. If you'll even have one.
