White: Win over Pettis earns Aldo lightweight title shot

by John Morgan |

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is now one win away from a shot at the promotion's lightweight title.

MMAjunkie.com on Monday confirmed with UFC President Dana White that if Aldo is victorious in his August fight with Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), he will move up to 155 pounds for a shot at the title in that division.

White's revelation is the latest development in a matchup that just 48 hours ago the UFC boss said the Brazilian champ wasn't interested in accepting. However, after a discussion with Aldo's manager, Andre Pederneiras, Aldo is now not only happy to accept the fight but also has an impressive reward waiting on him should he have his hand raised.

I agree with StrongSurvive, if he had a bad cut with Hominick, but was where he wanted to be weightwise, he could be there for 155 and still compete with the best in the division. He would keep his strength, even improve on it. I believe he could keep his speed possibly, and his finishing ability would still be there hopefully.

Bendo is a big dude, he is a bit unorthodox, I think it is a good fight but Bendo wins due to wrestling.

I think Aldo would get his weight to about 170 if he fought at lw. He's having to work at keeping his weight down at fw. Honestly, I think it may help him to go to 155 and not have to worry about his weight.

Once again, I never said he was a huge FW.So why the hell quote me and pick out, misconstrue, and exaggerate one thing in my post?I mean, you agree with me? Except for something that you wanted to correct me on..... that I didn't even say?Good job....You win the internets!!!

I never said anything that remotely hints that I would be unhappy with Aldo fighting at 155. I would love to see that!I was only speaking to the claims that he is some huge FW.

Yes, against hominick at 129....he fight everyone said he had a terrible cut for. Since then multiple people in his camp talked about how he was too muscular at that weight and that they were bringing him back down to his ~160 fighting weight where he performed his best.160 was the number they said they were targeting for Mendez and that Aldo felt much better there. Of course if many champions added 7 lbs of functional muscle they could fight at the next division up. That doesn't mean they are best suited for that weight class. 5'7" and 160 is the perfect size for a FW. 5'10 is average for LW and the muscular guys are 170-180 come fight time.

Also please show your "first hand evidence" that Aldo is "naturally 170," he was saying less than a year ago that he could make 135 if he tried.

I didn't say he was huge. Just that he was big and still maturing. Aldo has stated that he had plans to go to 55. The main reason he should go to 55 is because HE wants to. I'm just saying why it's good for him to go. I never said he'd be a bid LW. Just that he's a big 45er. After all..... Aldo is the one who wants to go to 155. I'll say it again...How anyone could be upset with the winner of Aldo Pettis fighting Ben is beyond me.You guys are never happy

5'7 is a totally normal height for a 155 lber? Ben Henderson is 5'8?The average height is 5'10. The champ, Ben Henderson, is a heavy (~175 lbs) 5'9.

Had you read my post above that, you'd realize that I have first-hand evidence that Aldo is around 165-167 in the cage and naturally about 170. And 5'7 is a totally normal height for 155. Bendo and Maynard, considered big 155ers, are both 5'8. I also wouldn't be surprised if Aldo was actually 5'7.5 as he has always seemed tall next to other 5'7ers. If Aldo put on 5-7 lbs of muscle he'd be 5'7 and 173-175, which by all accounts seems like an average LW.
