Play Joe Silva: Who's next for UFC on Fuel TV 8 fighters?

by Chris Palmquist |

The job of UFC matchmaker is similiar to that of a referee, nobody gives him praise for a job well done, but is quick to jump on him for any percieved mistake. In the case of UFC match maker Joe Silva's job, most fans think they can do it better. They do not however always understand the details behind the job. They don't understand fulfilling contacts, fighter requests, and dealing with injuries amongst the tons of things dealt with on a daily basis.

After every UFC event there is the enivitable question is what next's for the winners and losers. Some that lost might have a chance at redemption or some might be on the chopping block. Winners are almost always guaranteed a next bout, and some might get that next fight that puts them in title contention?

At the UFC on Fuel TV 8, two matchups with bigger implications for the winners took place. Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt battled in a fight that would have implications is the heavyweight division, which is always moving as the championship have changed hands more than any other in recent past. Mark Hunt wouldn't seem like a likely title contender, but there's not many if any who can boast a four fight win streak in the division. Struve will take a step back from title contention and likely will have a long lay off with a broken jaw.

Wanderlei Silva & Brian Stann fought a fight of the night, with Stann almost finishing Silva twice in the first round, but himself being finished by Silva in the second. It is assumed that both fighters will return to their actual weight class, the middleweight division, but who should they fight next? Silva is a legend in the sport and showed they he can still win top fights, but his 4-5 record since returning to the UFC, he is not likely to earn a title shot. Many are calling for him to retire, but it looks like he may have some fight left in him and personally I'd like to see him in there a few more times. Stann is a bit younger and a strong competitor, so it's likely to see him rack together a few more wins and still has a potential title run in the future.

So Underground, what do you think our the best possible matchups for Mark Hunt, Stefan Struve, Wanderlei Silva, & Brian Stann?

And what about veterans Diego Sanchez? Or Bellator super star Hector Lombard who drops to 1-2 inside the Octagon?

Look no farter...Belfort/Silva II for a Tuf series and a rematch. Hunt/Dos Santos for a title contender. Stann/Kennedy for a 4th of July match up.

I would love to see Wand retire on a big win, but unfortunately he's too much of a warrior. Will probably take a couple more bad losses to force him out.

I'd like Hunt to stay active while he is healthy, so Hunt vs the winner of Gonzaga vs Browne. I'd say Schaub, but after his last performance I have no interest in seeing Schaub fight anyone, let alone watch him attempt to hug Hunt for 15 minutes.I don't really like the idea of the smaller heavyweights fighting each other. Just seems like they'd be picking each other off. Like only one small heavyweight has the right to move up the ranks, but larger ones have all the options possible. So yeah, personally I don't want to see Hunt vs Nelson or Barry. As far as Wanderlei, I think I'd like him to stay at LHW. Wanderlei vs Jimi Manuwa sounds pretty good to me. Maybe a fight with Rashad Evans also. However I think Rashad should move down to MW. Wanderlei won't put him any closer to a title shot in either division.
