NY Gov. Cuomo warming to MMA, but AG backslides

Gov. Cuomo, whose own style has been equated at times to cage match fighting, seems to be warming to the idea of legalizing mixed martial arts in New York.

"I think it's making progress and it's something we're looking at as a possible source of revenue, and we are all about looking for revenue in this state," Cuomo told reporters at a Westchester County appearance today.

"So if we can bring economic activity in -- shows, etc. -- that's something we're very interested in and we're reviewing the current proposals."

Cuomo in the past has shown little enthusiasm toward legalizing the sport in New York.

The state Senate yesterday again passed a bill to do just that.

However, the move to regulate MMA in New York took a step back when the New York Attorney General cancelled discussions with the UFC. Ariel Helwani has the news.

Ariel Helwani @arielhelwani
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is greatly disappointed that the settlement conference scheduled today before the Federal Court has been cancelled because the New York Attorney General is no longer willing to discuss a settlement consistent with the position his Office has repeatedly taken in Court.

The Attorney General has once again changed his position on the meaning of the MMA ban in New York and we will vigorously urge the Federal Court to decide that the ban is unconstitutional."

It's all about the Assembly vote.

@LeoFromJersey
what does this mean man, it's a fail?

Ariel Helwani @arielhelwani
No, just that avenue, as expected, hit a roadblock. That was a hail mary, IMO. RT

@dojopowerson
So, we have to wait until next year?

Ariel Helwani @arielhelwani
No, there's still hope with the Assembly, which was the way they wanted to go. RT

It seems the UFC is making progress for mma in NY. I suggest that Dana should take some initiative and reach out to this guy and invite him to the first event at MSG. he should be sitting right next to Dana in the front row. Its easy to say "fuck that guy", but it would send a message about this businessif mma embraced him instead of neglecting him.

"...the whims of the goverment,who where responsible for arming the actual militia."I'm not taking a gun control position here (pro or con), but this is simply nonfactual. Militia arming of the time was whatever the citizens themsleves had for hunting and self defense, the gov't wasn't responsible for it, individuals were.

They took our jobs....   He took our guns....   Dude wtf are you talking about.The constitution was written in the 18 century. If you think the same rules apply literally your a fucking dummmy.   And even if you do they the meaning of the founding fathers literally you missing the point because the right was still restricted by  the whims of the goverment,who where responsible for arming the actual militia. Since these powers where entrusted to Congress they actually get to make restrictions upon the rights of the miltia. The states can put restrictions on the training of said militia.   Owning a private gun or being part of a well organised militia are not the same things.   But since there is a big fucking army now and idiot can kind of take it as a given that this army has replaced the need for a militia. Combine that with all the branches of law enforcement and the imperfection of having to institute a militia in the first place has faded from memory. The constition changes and adopts to its times constantly (or it used to before you got these idiots who claim that it is as set in stone as the 10 commandments ). Slavery was in the constitution,the changed that so why should the militia clause deserve a better faith (slavery was also very much about States rights now wasn't it).   Also how the fuck are you comparing gun controls with the legalization of MMA. One is a sport the other has nothing to do with sport. And people who say that its both condoning violence are the same dummies who say that violent video games,music or movies are the actual cause of all the fucking gun violence.   Its great news that there finally  moving to legalization. I do think the Fox deal helped tremendously with this. I was extremely sceptical about the Fox deal until now. I did not see enoug upsides to it. But with the institution of the Fox sport channels (MMA on the same channel as college football,college basketball and fucking european football....its going to draw so much new eyes from all the demo's they need to hit) and now this wavering of NYC the deal is finally baring some fruits for the future of MMA. Now some more blue chip sponsors need to move in,some more moviestars need to visit the titlefights and the regular press needs to make MMA more of a feature.

You know his opponents are going to attack Cuomo as a hypocrite for allowing "legalization of violence" while stripping citizens of firearms.Amendment IIA well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
