GSP opens as 2-1 favorite over Hendricks in anticipated bout

by Matt Erickson |

Georges St-Pierre is only days removed from his UFC title defense against Nick Diaz, but his next title challenger is already decided, as Johny Hendricks confirmed his number one spot, defeating Carlos Condit the same night St-Pierre defended his title. Although no actual date has beeen announced for the bout, it didn't stop the odds makers from setting the lines for the future showdown:

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (24-2 MMA, 18-2 UFC) opened as a -225 favorite over his next challenger, Johny Hendricks (15-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC), who is a +175 underdog.

Veteran oddsmaker Joey Oddessa on Wednesday confirmed the opening line with (

Oddessa believes Hendricks' strong wrestling background could pose a challenge to the champion.

"I've always admired the MMA wrestlers and been critiqued for it because of my love of the sport of wrestling, but there's no bias in my price," said Oddessa, who can be found at @mmaodds on Twitter. "It's a more than a winnable bout for Hendricks."

That's what people have said about every wrestler he has faced. In sorry but koscheck was robbed against Hendricks and that fact alone makes me believe their is no way he can win outside of a lucky punch. Btw GSP is gonna keep it standing and tool Hendricks.

Jonny's weakness is GSP's strength. How many times have we seen this from Georges? Why would this fight be any different then the last guys that were supposed to KO him?I respect Jonny but GSP coasts to victory again 50-45.

@OregonChaelClosedDueToBandWagonCrash  GSP is a technical wrestler, were as Hendricks is a power wrestler. Hendricks will only get taken down if he gets tired (in the 3rd round or later) hence I said he "should" win IF he improves his cardio.Look and compare the way they both took down Carlos Condit. GSP waits for the opportunity to catch Carlo's leg on a kick or something to that extent, so he can use leverage. Johny took Condit down with ease time after time, just picked him up like a kid and threw him.Not to mention that if Johny's left hand catches GSP, he's out cold.Nothing's guaranteed, but Hendricks will be the toughest and most difficult opponent St.Pierre has ever faced. My money's on Hendricks.

That is going to spread farther as the fight gets closer.

Gsp's reign will end in this fight as long as Hendricks improves his cardio. Hendricks is a powerful wrestler, he will never get taken down by gsp. On the stand up he's got the ability to knock him out, gsp doesn't have the greatest of chins.
