Gastelum upsets Hall, wins Ultimate Fighter 17

From early days of their time in The Ultimate Fighter house, their roles were cast. Uriah Hall was the flashy, powerful favorite, capable of intimidating the opposition, while Kelvin Gastelum was the inexperienced underdog, the last pick on his team.

It was an unlikely pairing to end the season, but they both survived the tournament structure to meet in the TUF 17 Finale, where the roles finally got upended.

Showing no fear, Gastelum took the fight to Hall, withstood his barrages, and edged him in a split-decision by scores of 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

We never got to see Uriah hall fight. Bubba was just so scared of him that he was already pre defeated. He showed all his weaknesses last night. Too cocky and that's what he got.

The point is they are allowed within the ruleset, and should be utilized more often. This fight being one of those cases.

Well, I hate to break it to you guys - although he may not get a contract as lucrative as what the UFC first officially offers. Head instructors at TSMMA/TSK get paid pretty damn well - and sadly much more than lower tier UFC fighters and even mid-tier fighters.

Although allowed, rounds are typically never scored 10-10. I cant remember the last time one was.

I think EVERY round should be scored 10-10 unless there is a finish.

There certainly should be more 10-10 rounds applied to judging, btw, as well as more 10-8 and even 10-7 rounds. If a round is too even to give either fighter an advantage, then it should be called a draw.Don't want fights to end in a draw? Implement "sudden death" rounds in cases of draws. Sudden death rounds would create more exciting situations.

From an interview with Keith Keizer:DW: Fans are under the impression that 10-10 rounds are discouraged in the state of Nevada. Can you comment on that, and explain your view on using the 10-10 for MMA bouts in Nevada?KK: "10-10 rounds are allowed, but should be used only if a judge feels that the round is even."DW: So to put this rumor to rest, judges are in no way discouraged from offering scores other than 10-9?KK: "Correct."DW: And you're OK with the use of 10-8 and 10-10 rounds?KK: "Yes."DW: In any state, almost every round has historically been scored 10-9, however, many feel that using more 10-10 and 10-8 scores would better reflect the different levels of dominance we see in the cage. Do you agree or disagree, and can you explain why?KK: "A round score should not influenced but what has happened 'historically.' Once again I disagree with any insinuation that we should tell judges they have to give more 10-10 or 10-8 rounds. Rather each round should be scored on its own merits, and nothing else."DW: Nevada has included detailed guidelines for referee stand-ups. Can you tell me why you decided to include more specific verbiage?KK: "That was a change that occurred after MMA in Nevada had been approved for some time, so a detailed explanation was needed. Nick Lembo and I (and the other committee members) tried to give explanations to other areas in our ABC MMA report."The would like to thank Keith Kizer for taking the time for this interview.

You're wrong. Rounds can and have been scored 10-10.
