Ian McCall living the (hard) dream

by Jack Brown |

Ian McCall, aka Uncle Creepy, is one of the top flyweights in the world.  Though he has yet to win a fight in the UFC, he gave the best two fighters in the division all that they could handle.  McCall is also one of the most charismatic and compelling fighters in the sport.  Fans have enjoyed interacting with him on The Underground for many years, and Jack even got an assist with some questions from The UG for this particular interview.  Please listen as Uncle Creepy discusses the following and more:

His early experiences with martial arts:
“We didn’t compete or anything.  We just learned really awful things to do to people pretty much, like eye gouges and groin strikes and stuff like that.”
“I would always get picked up on by those kids and then I would have to punch them or kick them.  I actually jump-kicked, like flying jump-kicked, some kid in the face a long time ago.”

His years of partying:
“My parents had money so I was always taking advantage of that and screwing around and doing copious amounts of illicit substances.  And like I said, back then getting girls and partying was my thing.  You know, when I went to college, I was living with Chuck, well I wasn't living with Chuck Liddell, but I was living down the street.  Him and Antonio Banuelos, I was hanging out with them all the time.  I think we were in Vegas like twice a month.  I was like eighteen, nineteen.  It was a lot of fun.”

His first fight in the UFC, against Demetrious Johnson:
"I thought I won obviously, but you know, I don't think I've ever told anybody this, but my wife actually said she was divorcing me the night before, the night of weigh-ins.  I weighed in and then all this drama happened."

His life now:
“I'm getting a divorce.  I've got my kid.  I'm in a much better place now.  Hopefully, I can start performing.  Otherwise, I'm going to get fired.”

When he’d like to fight next:
“[The UFC] said, June.  Now they're saying, maybe July.  I would love that time frame.  It gives me a few months to get ready physically.”

Who’d he like to fight next:
"Gaudinot?  Or I don't really care.  I just know him because he keeps calling me out.  Or he was calling me out for a while.  I'll fight anybody.  I don't really care.  I just want to fight and I want to win.  I want to go out and beat somebody up and show that I have every right to be in this division."

Where he’d like to fight next and if he’d like to fight in Boston in August:
"I would love to fight in Boston.  I've never been to Boston, but I have some family that's from there.  I'd love that.  My teammate, Shane Del Rosario, is fighting July 6th or something like that.  I'd love to fight on the same card as him because we live together and we could be in sync with our camps and push each other."

Regarding TRT:
“If someone needs to be on TRT, cool, especially if someone has an actual problem.  I have low testosterone from all the drugs I did as a kid or young man.  I wouldn't do it because of all the fan backlash.  I have such a strong following that I don't want people to get pissed off that I'm on TRT."

His relationship with the UG:
“Those are my real, they're my main fans.  They're the people that support me the most.  Not to say that anybody else is any better or worse, but those people, they have a passion for the sport that's unlike the other fans.  Other fans aren't as educated.  They haven't been around as long.  I've been on the UG for over ten years now.  It's just my spot."

His fighting idols (question from the UG):
“BJ, I just love style.  He went in there to hurt you.  He really wanted to ruin your day, and he did that to many people.”
“Sakuraba was awesome.  I'm a big fan of his."

How he spends his free time:
“I need a hobby, I think.”
“I don't really chase women anymore because I don't have time.  I have my daughter full-time so I can't really do that.  I'm not winning in that area of my life anymore like I used to.”

What it means to him to be a fighter:
“It's a dream.  I get to fight for a living.  I get to do the one thing that I like more than anything else in the world.”

Only an insecure person would pull some bullshit like that at such a critical time.  I have dated chicks like that.  No matter how hot they are sometimes you have to cut them off.  You can't have people in your life like that who are that selfish and self-serving.  People have to change themselves and these types of chicks always get off on the make-up session and trying to get you to fixate on them while you work it out and they will always say things to keep you hooked until the next time they pull the same shit.  They don't mature and grow up and change to where they have self-awareness and some level of control and responsibility for the shit they do.  Every ex I had like this I got rid of, and I have had several.  They piss me off just thinking about them because I feel like I could've been banging other chicks instead of falling for that bullshit.  So many smokin ho's I gave up being a good guy to crazy chicas.  I hope you steer clear of that distraction and keep moving forward.  Better girls always come along, with the best one coming out of nowhere when you least expect it.  And after you find her you'll have nothing but pussy thrown your way by tail you'd normally dive into.  They swarm when you find the right girl.  Stay focused man and stay positive and maintain some character and dignity and good things will eventually come your way when the crap works itself out.

Exactly what I thought. Curious to know Ian's take on it. Also, kudos on getting FT custody, not a lot of guys get that. There must be a good back story as to why.
