When UFC 161 headliner Renan Barao dropped out due to injury, the UFC needed to add some weight to the card.
So Roy Nelson has been added, vs. Stipe Miocic, on the main card. Nelson is coming off a three-fight, first-round-KO win streak, over Cheick Kongo, Matt Mitrione and Dave Herman. Miocic is coming off a loss to Stefan Struve in September; it was the first loss of his career.
UFC VP for Talent Relations Joe SIlva is searching for an alternate opponent for Eddie Wineland, who had been slated to fiight Barao. Should an opponent be secured, the main event will feature six fighters, rather than the usual five.
Miocic had been scheduled to fight Soa Palelei, who is now without an opponent, and will serve as an alternate, should
out of his scheduled fight with Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 on June 15 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, according to UFC officials.
Miocic is now left without an opponent, and will be on standby should there be a dropout by any of the four heavyweights on the card - Roy Nelson, Stipe Miocic, Pat Barry, and Shawn Jordan.
Palelei, who returned to the UFC on an eight-fight win streak, remained positive.
“Good things come to those who wait,” he tweeted.
