Bonnar 'never expected' Hall of Fame

Despite having never won a world title, Stephan Bonnar was one of the more recognizable faces in the UFC over the past eight years. His Ultimate Fighter Season 1 war with Forrest Griffin forever changed the MMA landscape, however he was suprised to hear he was being inducted into the UFC's Hall of Fame:

The 36-year-old light heavyweight was unsure of where he stood with the organization's head honcho, so needless to say when the news surfaced he was somewhat stunned.

"I never even dreamed [of being in the Hall of Fame]," Bonnar said on Friday's (May 31) edition of "Inside MMA" on AXS TV. "I did this as a hobby, I got picked for the show and just that was enough for me -- I could have died happy there."

Bonnar admits he never really anticipated to be inducted alongside legends of the sport such as Royce Gracie, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz and others, but knows how significant this moment is to his career, especially because he didn't see it coming.

"If they want to put me in the Hall of Fame then like, my god what an honor," said Bonnar. "I never really expected it."

Maybe, but I think Griffin-Bonnar led to the Fight Nights and other live fights on Spike. TUF could've been just another reality show - popular for a while, old news after a few seasons. There had to be a breakout fight to make people care about the sport beyond tuning in to watch a reality show about it. Griffin-Bonnar was that fight.

I couldn't believe he got HOF. Lucky it's called the "hall of fame" and not the " hall of success". Cos he had very little of the latter. Easily the least accomplished HOFer in any sport ever.

The Bonnar/griffin fight capped off what was already a successful season of TUF. It's not like if their fight had flopped or been over in a minute that spike wouldn't have renewed the deal. Wasn't it already one of the highest rated shows in spike history?
