UFC 164 results: Josh Barnett knocks out Frank Mir in first round

The UFC 164 co-main event featured a heavyweight title fight between former champion Frank Mir and Josh Barnett who is returning to the UFC after a decade away.

Josh Barnett waited 11 years for his return to the UFC. Once he got there, he didn't take much time getting the job done.

The UFC 164 co-main event matchup of former UFC heavyweight champions against Frank Mir ended with a premature referee stoppage, but there's no doubting Barnett was dominating the fight. "The Warmaster" scored a TKO victory at 1:56 of the opening round Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Wow. Didn't expect that gameplan from Barnett but obviously they had done their homework on Mir and Barnett had the contditioning to follow through with it. If Barnett can continue fighting disciplined and stick to gameplans he'll be a handfull for anyone in the top. Big congratulations to the Warmaster, love to see the Old guard still going strong.Mir seems to be in great shape but fights at his own pace, he can't(wont?) step it up and match or exceed the pressure he faces. At the pre-fight conference he talked about the risks of loosing and having to face a "no-name" at the prelims, that just might happen now.

Extremely surprised. Barnett fought good and more importantly smart. With all the talking he did, I really thought that he was going to take Mir down and get his arm broken. But instead he followed what I think is the blueprint to beating Mir. Stuff him up against the cage, hold him there, and land strikes from the clinch. It's what Brock did, it's what Carwin did, it's what Cormier did, and now it's what Barnett did. When you think about it, it's sort of sad that Mir hasn't figured out a way to avoid that position yet. Seems like such an intelligent guy.

JDS crushed him out in the open. But yes, Carwin, Cormier and now Barnett. Am I missing any?

Barnett looked awesome. He was more aggressive than his last couple of fights and was clearly after blood.

Just look at franks arms when he went down, they were limp but they should have let Josh punch him a few more times. He was just getting blasted for the minute before with nothing for Josh. Josh was hurting him bigtime.I could be wrong and Frank could have been going for a Tate down I mean take down
