Rankings Update 9.2.13: Barnett jumps four spots, Pettis enters p4p ranks

by Chris Palmquist |

After each live event, the UFC polls various members of the media to update its rankings in each weight division as well as the pound for pound rankings.

With only a couple meaningful bouts at this past weekend's UFC 164 the Heavyweight and Lightweight division is where we saw the most movement.

Lightweight Champion: Anthony Pettis

1. Benson Henderson -1

2. Gilbert Melendez -1

3. TJ Grant

4. Josh Thomson

5. Gray Maynard

6. Rafael dos Anjos

7. Nate Diaz

8. Jim Miller

9. Donald Cerrone

10. Pat Healy

Heavyweight Champion: Cain Velasquez

1. Junior dos Santos

2. Daniel Cormier

3. Fabricio Werdum

4. Antonio Silva

5. Travis Browne

6. Josh Barnett +4

7. Alistair Overeem

8. Frank Mir -2

9. Roy Nelson -1

10. Stipe Miocic -1

With becoming champion you automatically earn the top ranking in the UFC's new ranking system, so Pettis is the champ and Benson Henderson dropped to the number one contender rank. However from the comments of UFC President over the weekend it is very unlikely Henderson will receive an immediate rematch.

Josh Barnett returned to the UFC after a decade away and made a big jump to sixth in the divisional rankings with his first round win over Frank Mir. Barnett stopped Mir in the first round and is likely to get a top five ranked opponent next.

Also to note, with his spectacular first round win over Benson Henderson, Anthony Pettis moved into eight spot in the pound for pound rankings, having been previously unranked. Henderson dropped to the tenth spot in the pound for pound rankings.

i understand that it does not make complete sense...but if a 2-6 team beats a 5-3 team in the same division it doesnt mean they move ahead of them in the division rankings.(i know i know, but just trying to ease your minds a little)but pettis won and skipped ahead of who he beat! shit, wel uhh...nevermind.

It is just like the Rory MacDonald situation.  He hadn't beaten a top 10 WW guy prior to Ellenberger (please don't say BJ Penn), yet he was being ranked as high as no. 3!

LOL @ Gilbert Melendez being ranked over TJ Grant.  Who has Melendez beat in the UFC to justify such a high ranking?

He had been killing guys outside of the top ten. How does a win against Tehuna make you ranked #2?

Glover has been killing everyone he faces. That is why he is ranked 2nd. As for Stipe and Roy, let it go, it has been fucked up for weeks and weeks. It shouldn't be any surprise at this point.
