Boxer Adrien Broner: MMA not a real sport recently interviewed the undefeated World Boxing Underwear super featherweight  champion (of the world) Adrien Broner, and the discussion turned to mixed martial arts.

"I'm really not too big on MMA," said Boner. "I really don't look at it as a real sport because anybody can come into MMA and learn that. You can learn that. Listen, you can't just come in to boxing and be a world champion. You've got to be born with it."

"Like you," he said to the interviewer. "Right now, you can go into MMA, learn all the submission moves and be a world champion. It doesn't matter how long it takes. I don't give a f--- what you do, you can try to come over to boxing, and you won't ever be a world champion. I'm not disrespecting you, but I'm just saying, that's how it works."

What do you think UG? Is the sidestep really all you need to know to make it in MMA after all?

Don't worry Rose. I don't see a single double negative there.  I see a triple negative, but grammar police are human too.

The has been boxer knocking out the has been mma fighter in a standup fight isn't shocking and its certainly not indicative of anything other than the fact that if you train in one discipline your entire life, you will excel in that one dimension. Look at how Coture v. Toney ended up, the exact opposite. Diving deep into one unfamiliar territory or the other is pretty stupid for either type of combat fighter. You could do this all fuckin day even within the sport of mma itself. Fights like the one last spring between GSP and Diaz spark the same debate. The real question is which combat sport represents a real street fight? The one where you tie pillows around your fists and are restricted to one singular dimension or the one where you wear 4 oz. gloves and can incorporate man dimensions into your game. The one that when you encounter adversity during fight combat, enables you to display 'fight iq' in a limited fashion or the one where you can get creative and win with many methods? To me, boxing is like simple arithmetic while mma is like multidimensional calculus. You use the simpler mathematical skills in calculus but over all, Calculus is much more complex. Sure you could sit there and intensely add a bunch of numbers all day and get really good at it like a little retard instead of using differentials and integration but why?

Yes but guys like Matt Riddle will the exception to the rule as the sport of MMA progresses. MMA might have been little more the an mix between an Amateur sport and entertainment in the beginning of the Ufc days but it obviously developed into something more. Its featured on a national sports channel shouldn't that alone say enough about its qualification?

Are you trolling or something.First of all what he said was, the great intellectual Bronner, that MMA wasn't a sport because, as opposed to boxing, anybody could learn it. With boxing it, according to him, came mostly down to god given talent.Do i even have to begin to start explaining everything that is wrong with that statement.Second of all, how can a sport ( yes it is) that actually incorporates others almost exactly ( the gloves might be different and you may chose to plant you feet differently but you can still basically still use all the same techniques as in boxing) be mere " entertainment" all of a sudden. All combat sports do is replicate actual combat ( which is part of basic human DNA) in a competative and reasonably save environment. MMA does this better the (almost) any individual combat sport yet it is mere "entertainment".Broner statement reminds me about how my dear old mother thinks about the game industry. They just cannot wrap their heads around the concept even if it is staring them in the face.I like boxing and all but lets face it it is grounded on old Victorian principles ( modern boxing that is) that are antiquated. Its fun to watch but its more fun to give someone the tools of boxing and a shitload of other martial arts techniques.
