Royce: Cross training to blame for recent Gracie family losses

Mixed martial arts was founded by the Gracie family, but Saturday was a particularly hard night for the clan at WSoF 5, with Rolles losing via KO in the second, Gregor losing a UD, and only Neiman picking up a win (and by submission) in his pro debut.

it is widely understood that MMA has developed from its Vale Tudo origins, drawing now from striking, BJJ, and above all, from wrestling. The Gracie family has been faulted for not keeping up with the changes in the sport.

However, in an interview with MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz, Royce Gracie says the reason Gracie family fighters are not doing well is in fact because they are cross training.

"Jiu-jitsu is enough," said Royce. "I’ve trained boxing in the past to learn the distance, trained wrestling to understand how he would take me down, but I won’t get there to fight my opponent’s game. The guys from the family want to complement their game, like if jiu-jitsu was incomplete. I guess they forgot a little about history."

"I do jiu-jitsu my whole life, so why would I try to stand and bang with Mike Tyson? I’m going to learn boxing in six months because my opponent is good in boxing? That makes no sense."

"Roger, like any other member of the family, is trying to learn wrestling, boxing. I believe in pure jiu-jitsu. That’s what I’ve done in the past. You have to go back to your roots and train Gracie jiu-jitsu."

"Tim Kennedy is one of the toughest guys in my opinion. If Roger had defeated him, he’d have deserved a title shot. Tim Kennedy is really, really tough. Why they cut Roger I really don’t know either, I have no idea."

It is all so silly considering we have been told the GJJ system came from stepping out of,  and changing a some what rigid TMA.

Maia got back to his roots ...remember the Marquart fight... Maia was training with V. silva and working on his stand up.NOW look at him... Roger is on another level of BJJ... no reason for him to want to strike with anyone.Sure, cross train to respect punches and kicks, but do not look for the KO.ROGAN: it is true, all you need is love in this world and you will be fine.and remember, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Awesome, I've said this very thing for years. All joking aside, love didn't get him record deals, hardwork and talent did. And love didn't cut it in front of the Dakota.

although it isnt absolute, there is a lot of truth to this statement. Short rounds allows for the athleticism factor to play into it to a huge degree

This is the Jiu Jitsu version of the Beatles song, "All you need is Love."  Big Beatles fan, but you need more than love to get by in this world, bitch.

Or like watching a QB zip outside the pocket over and over only to get blasted over and over because he's slow as fuck. But damn, he keeps working at it and trying. Meanwhile he has a cannon of an arm.

1) 5 minutes rounds with no gi do not lend themselves to traditional BJJ-style grappling with an opponent who is not inclined to grapple with you.2) Wrestling was pretty obviously displayed as the superior base from clear back in the early days, when wrestlers first started competing in the UFC.3) Royce should remember that BJJ was an adaptation and evolution of an existing martial art, to face the realities of new styles and techniques that hadn't previously been seen by the Gracies. Likewise, a similar evolution of BJJ is needed to keep pace with the newer styles and athletes that are showing up in the octagon.
