Sperry: Jacare tougher fight for Chris Weidman than Anderson Silva

BTT co-founder Mario Sperry is a legend in the sport, and at age 46 he is not done yet. He is currently training in Brazil for a grappling superfight against Fabio Gurgel at the 2013 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships in China.

Sperry recently conducted a wide-ranging interview with Marcelo Alonso, that included his thoughts on Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and Chris Weidman.

For TUF era fans, Jacare means Alligator in Brazilian Portuguese.

Marcelo Alonso: Who do you favor in the Silva-Weidman rematch?

Mario Sperry: It will once again be a tough fight for Anderson due to the abilities of Weidman. The first fight was not easy, and the second will not be. Weidman will come even more prepared.

MA: In our last talk you said Jacare is a tougher opponent for Weidman than Silva. Why do you think so?

MS: Comparisons are complicated, but I think their styles match. What does Weidman do best? Takedowns. What Jacare do best? Jiu - jitsu. So that's why I think Jacare would be more complicated. Against Jacare, Weidman would be insecure, unsure if the fight would unfold standing or on the ground. Against Anderson, he can expect to fight standing. And this unpredictability makes, for me, Jacare more dangerous for Weidman. Also, I´m really impressed the way Jacaré is developing his MMA game. I see him training here every day. His ground game is amazing. He has dangerous weapons standing up, his cardio is absolutely impressive and his heart is scary. I see him with all the tools to be a champion.

It’s not a matter of not respecting anyone’s talent. In modern MMA submissions aren’t that common at high levels. They’re especially unusual when a fighter is a known sub guy and his opponent knows to play it safe. With 5 minute rounds, restarts, BJJ knowledge being commonplace, camps full of champions, and wrestling skills favoring the top man – the deck is stacked. Usually when it does happen it’s either a mismatch or very early in a fight. This isn’t 1998 when 2/3 of fights ended in submission. We’ve seen a boatload of major events go down littered with BJJ black belts and nobody even got close to one.Jacare is a solid opponent who CAN beat Weidman, but I’d give him better odds of a KO than a submission. BJJ skills, even at the highest possible level, just aren’t the dominating force they once were. Jacare didn’t become feared until he started knocking guys out. You can’t just sprawl and scramble all day when a guy can blast you.It has nothing to do with anyone's talent, but a combination of talent, the rules, the training regimen, and short rounds.

All I'm saying is Jacare has the tools to submit Weidman if the fight goes to the ground... whether it happens or not we wont know until they fight... I'm not dissing Weidman in any way, I just think some of the prior comments were not giving Jacare much credit for the skillset

On the other hand, he couldn't submit Joey Villasenor or Luke Rockhold or Tim Kennedy or Mayhem. I agree with the other guy that it is probably pretty unlikely that Weidman would be submitted.Roger Gracie couldn't submit Tim Kennedy in a fight that spent a lot of time on the ground...

But would love to see the fight eventually, UFC needs to stop protecting Sonnen from grapplers and JAcare choke him out. Then after that JAcare can get his title shot ************************ Jones is a wrestler and he man handled Sonnen.  Rashad is also a good wrestler and an accomplished striker, so expect another manhandling against Sonnen.

Let me guess...you're basing this on BJJ accomplishments and not MMA, right? This isn't 1998.

I Think Jacare beats both. Maybe not a tougher fight,
