White: For all intents and purposes, Renan Barao is the real champion

As of today UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has not fought in two years, a unanimous decision over Demetrious Johnson.

Cruz then suffered a series of injuries and operations, while Renan Barao won five in a row, including the two defenses of the UFC Interim bantamweight championship.

At the UFC World Tour stop in Rio de Janeiro recently, UFC president said that

Renan Barao is a champion,” said White. “If you look at Renan Barao and what he has done, he’s beaten everybody that Dominick Cruz would be fighting if Dominick Cruz was healthy and was the champion. So, [the interim label] takes nothing away from [Barao], other than just that pin, that place holder until Dominick Cruz comes back.

“But for all intents and purposes, Renan Barao is the real champion. He’s the one that’s beating the guys that need to be beaten.”

If Cruz does not return by early 2014, White will in his words "have to make a decision."

His day should already be here. If anything this guy should be getting serious bonuses or something. I feel for Cruz but damn 2 years is too long.

There's a lot of other factors but one of them is definitely the fact that champion vs. champion looks way better headlining a PPV which means more $$$$

Kind of awkward for the Klitschkos. Do they have to hunt Rocky Marciano down in the afterlife, or would just digging up his skeleton and punching it count?

Barao actually finished someone, cruz on the otherhand doesnt and is boring, so give the belt to barao.

GSP started saying he wasn't the champ anymore half way through his rehab 8 months after the injury and Condit kept responding with "you're still the champ" and he would still say he wasn't. Cruz is holding onto that thing like a life preserver and hasn't said shit, and if he has and Dana or Joe SIlva or Lorenzo has said no to stripping him then one of them is being really classless about this. He'll have to fight Barao when he gets back anyways, give the kid a few months of real champ treatment  he deserves. Seems like some kind of fear thing that Cruz may not get it back and the UFC wants him to have a belt.   This has become idiotic.

Three totally different situations. Also and Ronda were champions of divisions that the UFC didn't have until they were brought in. That being said Dom should be stripped and get a shot right away as a contender.
