Palhares banned from the UFC for life

At last night's UFC Ultimate Fight Night 29 Rousimar Palhares defeated Mike Pierce with a heel hook submission in the first round. Palhares held the submission after Pierce tapped and even as the ref tried to stop break up the fighters. There is no word yet on any injuries received by Pierce in the bout. Palhares had previously had the same issue in other bouts, but this is the last time it will happen in the UFC, as Dana White has banned him from the organization:

@danawhite tells me on @ESPNOlbermann that Rousimar Palhares is banned. won't ever fight for UFC again...

He got off lightly after his infraction in the Drwal fight.A 90 days suspension when he wouldn't have fought for that long was a slap on the wrist.Bravo Zuffa!

You also have to look at the money issue here. If Pierce has to have ACL surgery thats on UFC's dime. So you can bet that anyone who gets beaten by Toquiho has to go to the hospital all on UFC's insurance. At that point the hidden cost of a fighter is greater than his benefit not to mention that nobody is going to want to fight him and brings controversy into the media.

This occasion didn't seem too bad, although it is a repeat offence so even a holding slightly long when you have previous is putting yourself in danger!

The "extra crank" (that would be the greatest infraction, IMO) during the 1 second time-frame when the ref intervenes is actually from the method of referee intervention. He pushes on Palhares' body with his head, further rotating the torque on the leg. That's not Palhares' fault, and he should not be punished for it.

I like how you just ignore the fact he cranked the sub even harder when the ref said let go.   It dosent matter how long he HELD the sub after the fact. The issue is he CRANKED on it AFTER the ref was on him telling him to stop.

I disagree with him receiving any punishment for a brilliantly executed move. The ref (not the tap) determines when the fighter stops fighting; and IMO, 1 seconds is a reasonable reaction/response time.

My Portuguese was (still is) pretty rudimentary, but I remember thinking he either said "under cooked" or "uncooked". I went with the translation that seemed the more reasonable of the two.
