At this point, Rousimar Palhares probably wishes he had lost vs. Mike Piere on Wed at UFN 29. Palhares won via heel hook submission early in the first round, but held it too long. Palhares celebrated, but not for long.
Although he earned the sole submission of the night, UFC president withheld the $50,000 "Submission of the Night" bonus, due to the profoundly flagrant nature of the foul. White also said further steps would be taken.
First it was announced that Palhares would be released from his contract with the UFC.
Then six-time Emmy Award winning sportswriter, television reporter, and author Jeremy Schaap tweeted that White had banned Palahares for life from the organization
Now the regulating body in Brazil, Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (Cabmma), has suspended Plahares for 90 days beyond any medical suspensions he may receive.
"The determination of the period of suspension considers, among other things, the athlete's recurrence of unsportsmanlike conduct of the same nature," a CABMMA statement reads according to MMAJunkie.
Palhares received a 90-day suspension by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission in 2010 for an identical offense at UFC 111 vs. Tomasz Drwal.
There is a thin line in mixed martial arts between the world's greatest sport, and barbarity. What makes it work is not the chaos, it is the rules. When those rules are egregiously violated, the consequences are terrible, and they should be.
