Machida enters middleweight rankings in fifth

After each live event, the UFC polls various members of the media to update its rankings in each weight division as well as the pound for pound rankings.

With only a couple meaningful bouts at last weekend's Ultimate Fight Night 30, the most significant change was the addition of Lyoto Machida to the middleweight rankings:

Champion : Chris Weidman

1 Anderson Silva

2 Vitor Belfort

3 Ronaldo Souza

4 Michael Bisping

5 Lyoto Machida *NR

6 Luke Rockhold

7 Mark Munoz -2

8 Francis Carmont -1

9 Costa Philippou -1

10 Chael Sonnen

Lyoto Machida was previously unranked, as he had never fought in the division, but now is already considered a top five middleweight. Machida also remained ranked in the light heavyweight division, but that will likely change as it continues his middleweight career.

It is almost easier to just stay champion and prepare for one dude at a time, than be in the top 4 with no idea who you have to fight while also knowing you will probably have to win 2 in a row to get a title shot. For a title shot Machida will probably have to beat Vitor and the probably fight the loser of the Anderson vs. Wiedman fight for a chance... or some variation thereof.Tough

Does anybody truly believe Bisping should be ranked higher than Machida? I understand he's done more in the division but not overall. Machida would be an awful matchup for him imo

Bisping beat 2 top 10 MW in belcher and Stann. Plus he's last couple losses in years have been a split decision loss to sonnen and a loss to belfort whose #3. Machidas history at LHW has nothing to do at MW.

It wasn't that long ago that he lost to Rockhold.Hes improving a lot but so has Chael. He could absolutely outwrestle him.Is there a chance he gets caught in a sub?For sure, but Chael has proven he can beat guys at the level of Jacare.

Machida should be #2 at worse

Right, because Machida's history until this point doesn't matter. Even if it didn't, Machida finished a top 10 opponent without even being hit. Last time a Bisping fight ended in the first round was 2008 and he has never finished a top 10 opponent. So what criteria are we using to rank Bisping over Machida? More fights at 185...that makes sense. I wonder how many fighters have more fights at 185 than Machida, let's get counting so we can figure out where Machida ranks.
