Rosi Sexton & Joe Rogan meeting of the minds on Twitter

Cain Velasquez beat Junior dos Santos so badly at UFC 166 that the sport has begun a process of looking differently at when and how fights are stopped.

The fact that a fighter can intelligently defend him or herself is the current standard by which a referee stops a fight. There are, however, exceptions. If for example a fighter receives a cut over the eye, although the fighter may be able to fight okay, the bout is stopped, as a cut over the eye can cause permanent nerve damage.

There is a growing body of knowledge around pugilistic dementia/chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in combat sports. Unlike a cut over the eye which has immediate and clear potential consequences, CTE characteristically starts long, long years after the trauma. Thus, the same standard that would be used to stop a contest where a fighter is showing intelligent defense but has a potentially harmful cut over the eye, could also be used to stop a fight were a fighter is taking too much head trauma.

At UFN 30 on Saturday night Jessica Andrade beat Rosi Sexton in relentless fashion, and UFC commentator Joe Rogan voiced the opion that the fight should be stopped.

Rosi Sexton is arguably the smartest person in mixed martial arts. She has a First Class Mathematics degree from Cambridge (US equivalent would be graduating Magna Cum Laude from Yale with a degree in Math) and a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science from the University of Manchester. Sexton then decided to purse a career in MMA, and runs an osteopathy practice in Manchester. She is also a mom.

So changing standards in MMA ran into brilliant doctor and the result was, well, interesting.

•Well, that didn't really go to plan. Thanks to everyone for all the support, it's much appreciated.
•Well, that was a tough day at the office, but I'm ok. Damage is all pretty superficial. Thanks for all the support, it means a lot.

Derek Suboticki ‏@UntetheredSubo
Hey @RosiSexton, I have to ask: would you have been furious at your corner had they stopped the fight?

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
my corner know me better than anyone and they made the right decision.

So @RosiSexton is "too tough for her own good" but Sanchez/Melendez is "fight of the century"? Be consistent please, Joe Rogan. #mma #UFC

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
•People should watch fights without the commentary if they want to see what's actually going on.
•Criticise me all you like, but don't ever criticise my corner for treating me the same as any other fighter, regardless of gender.

@RosiSexton  regardless of gender, you're too tough for your own good

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
Maybe let me be the judge of that.

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
•48 hours post fight - I have 2 black eyes, otherwise I'm 100% fine.
•You could have given me an IQ test as I stepped out of the cage, and I'd still have scored higher than Joe Rogan ;-)

Joe Rogan ‏@joerogan
I agree :)

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
ha ha! Thanks for being a good sport. Disagreed with your comments about the fight, but plenty of respect for what you do. :-)

Joe Rogan ‏@joerogan
I've got mad respect for you, Rosi. Both for your skills and your heart. My commentary was purely out of concern.

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
I appreciate the intention. I was ok though; and although I look like a panda, I'm fine now. Thanks for the tweet!

@joerogan I think you were taking way too much damage in that fight.

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
I was there. I'm fine.

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
•Blimey. I didn't realise there were so many people on twitter missing a sense of humour. Maybe check under the bed & behind the sofa.
•Any more @joerogan fans who'd like to lynch me? May as well all give me a good kicking while I'm down. Only until the referee stops it, mind

Joe Rogan ‏@joerogan
Please, anyone tweeting @RosiSexton negatively re: me, I would appreciate it if you didn't. She was cracking a joke, and she's very cool.

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
phew, thanks! ;-)

Joe Rogan ‏@joerogan
It would do the world a lot of good if we all made a habit out of trying really hard to not be unnecessarily upset at things. #FreakParty

Win _Butler ‏@WinTenoch83
@RosiSexton maybe you were joking but there wasn't a need to insult joe. Nobody knows who you are or cares #cunt

Rosi Sexton ‏@RosiSexton
@WinTenoch83 you seem to have failed to grasp what a "joke" is. Congratulations for being even dumber than I believed possible.

So what do you think UG? Should the fight have been stopped early? And why?

Wow, it's really apparent reading this thread that a lot of UG members don't have the slightest idea how difficult it is to study something like Computer Science to PhD level at one of the world's most prestigious universities. Also, I hate to phrase it this way, but where was all the concern for (say) Chuck Liddell, when he was getting starched with baby deer legs in multiple fights? He should never have been back in the cage after the Rashad KO following the Quinton KO, and yet Dana let us see him get brutally destroyed twice more. To me, there is no comparison at all between the punishment taken by Rosi versus Forrest, Chuck and other UFC men's roster athletes. d

Nah...I find a middle ground---I just do the "youre" in a text or FB post, to clearly distinguish from "your". That said, I still think if you TRULY care about 1)your point 2)your thought process 3)that it's communicated to the most amount of people, you're (!) gonna use the right grammar, watch the red squiggles for spelling stuff, & give your post a quick proofread before you send it into the world. Like it or not, it does impact your reputation, & the respect of the point you're making, if it's not laden with crap errors. Like someone said, it shows you care enough in general to deliver your point with the least amount of distractions for the reader...AND it shows you're at least intelligent enough to know how to write the English language.

I agree withe Hex, the point of language is communication not pedantry. While the difference between "your" and "you're" is annoying, there's almost no chance that someone reading is going to misunderstand something because the wrong one was used. To require it in formal settings is one thing, to harp on it in a casual setting like this seems a bit much. I think language is a tool for us and over time it changes based on our needs. I don't think it should be used a bludgeon to demonstrate intellectual superiority on message boards.
