The success of the modern UFC was born from the first season of The Ultimate Fighter 1 in 2005. There were 16 fighters: Stephan Bonnar, Kenny Florian, Forrest Griffin, Sam Hoger, Alex Karalexis, Josh Koscheck, Chris Leben, Nathan Quarry, Josh Rafferty, Diego Sanchez, Chris Sanford, Alex Schoenauer, Lodune Sincaid, Bobby Southworth, Mike Swick, Jason Thacker.
Now only four are remain in the UFC: Josh Koscheck, Chris Leben, Diego Sanchez, and Mike Swick. Swick has faced a series of injuries and Leben has faced worse; only Sanchez and Koscheck considered top tier.
Saturday night Koscheck lost his third fight in a row, to Tyron Woodley. This follows losses to Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks, and some fans thought Kos might be cut.
However, at the post fight media scrum UFC president Dana White said said that rather than cutting Kos, he hoped he was staying around.
“Josh sent me a huge text, and his text sounded a little bit like retirement,” said White as transcribed by MMAJunkie. "I don’t ever mess with guys when they talk about retirement, but it might be a little premature for Josh, too.”
“I think Josh is still one of the most talented guys out there. He fought a beast who was ready to go tonight. Josh hurt him tonight. Josh hurt him. I love Koscheck. I love that kid. I love the way he fights, I love his attitude. The guy gets booed out of the arena every time he comes in, but he still goes in and fights his ass off. He’s a tough kid. When you’re standing in the octagon and you look across, you know you’re in for a fight.”
“I got to talk to him and see if that was a retirement text that he was sending me. People are gonna say what they’re gonna say, I’ve got a soft spot for season 1 guys.”
