Holly Holm wants 'six figures' to fight with Ronda Rousey

Holly Holm's manager and promoter Lenny Fresquez stood up with Sherdog, and discussed what their team wants with the UFC. Holm, 32, is wildy popular in her home state of New Mexico, and has won women's boxing world title 18 times. She is 6-0 in MMA, the same record UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey had when she entered the UFC.

Holm began MMA only in 2011; the bulk of her career in combat sports has been in boxing. However, Holm's trainer in boxing is Mike Winkeljohn, one half of the Jackson/Winklejohn MMA that so dominates MMA, so the transition was seamless. A showdown between the champion former boxer and the champion former judoka could be compelling indeed.

Fresquez began by detailing his history with Holm.

"Holly started her career about ten years ago with me," said Fresquez. "She lost her first fight with me - it was a technical knockout... But I've always stood behind my fighters. Holly's just the one that took every advantage of the opportunities that we've laid in front of her."

"We developed her in boxing, first ten fights. Then after her first ten fights, we pretty much put her with anybody that would fight her. And as you know, she's fought the who's who of women's boxing. And we're just trying to do the same thing in MMA.

"She's a special fighter, and people got to understand that from the boxing world. I've had conversations with the UFC, with (UFC women's matchmaker) Sean Shelby - very nice guy. We're just on different pages with the UFC. There's no doubt we want we want to go to the UFC, at the right time. But right now the UFC's in a different league. The UFC doesn't have but maybe five girls that could really give Holly competition.

"Se we're just waiting for the UFC to give Holly the right opportunity, because we want a title fight. We want to fight the best UFC fighter."

When asked what amount they were looking for for Holm's debut, Fresquez was clear.

"We're looking for six figures," he replied. "And there's not too many fighters that make six figures. Right now Holly earns probably more than 80% of the male fighters in the UFC, and probably earns more than 98 of the female fighters."

"We'd like to work with them, I don't want to be disrespectful to the UFC. But they also have to understand. They've bought Strikeforece, they've bought all these different ones. Holly's a franchise, as you can see. She's not just your normal fighter. She's more of a franchise, a key marquee. And to be honest with you, I think she'd represent the face of the UFC better than Ronda Rousey.

"She's a classy person, not that Ronda's not a classy person. I think she'd make a beautiful (face of WMMA).

Holm's next fight will reportedly be with Brazilian flyweight Julie Werner in a co-promotion with Legacy FC for the bantamweight title in March in Albuquerque. Werner lost to Vanessa Porto, three times, and has not faced someone with a winning record since 2005.

Kaufman has great striking. You seem confused. And not even Guyborg can finish quickly enough with her striking to avoid the take down.Ronda is just one of those fighters where people keep telling themselves "next time they'll lose for sure". Doesn't matter if you're wrong 20 times in a row... Next time, she'll lose.

No troll, Rhonda's striking is appalling. It's even worse than Brock's in that Brock could at least bungalow people down. They both are extremely gun-shy and extremely one dimensional.First good striker Rhonda fights that Rhonda can't easily throw to the ground is going to light her up.Liz's performance was pretty eye opening. Rhonda is recklessly aggressive and until now she has just brute forced people via superior athleticism. The first lady she fights she can't just brute force is going to crush her I think. The real test will be when she(I think she will quit after her first loss tbh) has that first rematch with whomever dispatched her. Rhonda focused and fighting smart is probably much more dangerous than berserker Rhonda.

Is it me or is Holm yet to fight anyone even top 15 in her division? Don't get me wrong, I like Holm has a fighter and see a lot of potential there but to as for a title fight and six figures without proving you can hang with the top-flight (boxing doesn't count) is a bit presumptuous.

^^ p.s. I agree with everything you said about Holly. The fact that their personalities are so different could make for an epic rivalry. Either you love the humble Holms or the bad girl/tough alpha bitch Rousey. I'm still pissed at the Askren fiasco. They least Dana could do is sign Holly.

I doubt that's true. This forum is no reflection of her popularity. My GF loves Ronda. She thought she came across as a strong willed woman on TUF. Many others never saw TUF who are Ronda fans. Even if you hate her and want to see her lose you're still invested in her career.

Unfortunately your line of thinking everyone should demand 6 figures doesnt actually work in the real world.

All fighters who want to fight in the UFC, the premier organization, should be demanding a six figure contract.  The fact that some of these guys sign on for a mere $5k a fight and only fight twice a year is the reason why these guys can't get good contracts. You settle for less. The UFC made $57 million last year in revenue and paid out less than 20% of that to fighter's salaries.  All 300+ of them you do the math. Now keep in mind that out of that 20% the money is then pushed to a select few guys who make $400k a year whether or they hold a belt.  And a just a slight more guys who make over $100k most of them are TUF winners, but the caveat is that they have to fight a certain number of times a year to for the sum to equal $100k.  The vast majority makes less than $30k per fight. You continue to take DFW's excuses for the meager pay as "It's a growing sport" or "We offer OFTN bonuses" or some other worthless food that looks fulfilling but actually has zero calories.

Lol, seriously? I do believe the realization that Rhonda is a miserable example of a representative for the UFC came AFTER she had already been anointed queen. Dana wishes everyday that he had played that differently.

Want 6 figures? Start stringing together wins somewhere other than New Mexico.
