'Big' John McCarthy, who used to be a staple inside the UFC octagon unti he's 2007 retirement, will be refeereing the UFC on FOX 9 main event:
Veteran referee John McCarthy will oversee Saturday’s flyweight title bout between champion Demetrious Johnson (18-2-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) and Joseph Benavidez (19-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC) at UFC on FOX 9.
If the headliner goes the distance, judges Derek Cleary, Mike Bell and Wade Vierra will score the fight, according to a representative from the California State Athletic Commission.
MMAjunkie today requested and received officials assignments from the commission, which oversees the fight card at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. The event’s main card airs live on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie.

Although official are selected by athletic commissions, John McCarthy was at almost every major UFC event as the promoter often had input as to who they would prefer work their shows. McCarthy retired in 2007 to purse other endeavors, but eventually returned back to reffing. During his absence, McCarthy spoke publically about some issues with the UFC and some of the major athletic commissons and on his return to the sport, was somewhat blackballed by Zuffa and those same ACs.
However, McCarthy is a long-time California resident and regardless of whether or not the UFC would like to use him, the California State Athletic Commission has assigned him to this show.
