Abel Trujillo: Calculated knees are worth the risk

Abel Trujillo defeated Roger Bowling at the UFC on FOX 9 by referee stoppage in the third round. The fight was a rematch as their last bout was ruled a no contest after an unintentional illegal knee by Trujillo.

Depsite the outcome of the first fight, Trujillo utilized his full aresenal of strikes for the rematch, choosing to take an acceptable risk:

“It was very important I finished him the second time,” Trujillo told MMAjunkie. “Also, I felt like (UFC President) Dana White had my back after the first fight, and he said I won, so it was very important I did the same thing in the second fight.”

The sequence that ended the bout included a knee that, on camera, looked as though it might have been illegal. Further replays, though, showed that it landed legally to the body. Regardless, Trujillo said he isn’t going to make the same mistake twice. And moving forward, the Blackzilian fight team member said he’s not going to change his style of fighting.

“I knee a lot,” Trujillo said. “I knee when guys come up, they’re susceptible to the sternum area, so I threw it. I knew I wasn’t going to hit him in the face.”

You're right for the most part. But the refs do take intent in to consideration. 99/100 times, Lesnar's glancing blow the back of Frank's head, as Frank turned away, untargeted, wouldn't result in a stoppage. It's still a stoppage either way if he accidentally hits to the head. Ruins the fight.I don't see anybody being dirty and doing it intentionally though. Intentional fouls are so rare.

It was a no contest. He should have been DQ'd. Of course he thinks they're worth the risk. If they land legally, they're pretty devastating. If they land illegally, you'll just get handed a NC in a fight you were clearly losing. Actually I don't even think there is a risk. I just don't understand how you can throw an "unintentional" knee.

I don't understand what you're trying to say? You mean last night or the time they fought before when he was actually was DQ'd? Last night sure looked legal to me.

This is why he should have been dq'd in the Bowling fight.
