White: No interim title for light or heavyweight divisions

With both UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez on the shelf, some wonderered if we might see an interim title holder for both or either those weight divisions. However, that won't be the case, according to Dana White who clarified the company's position on interim titles:

One option that’s off the table, according to UFC President Dana White, is an interim title fight. Although Velasquez (13-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) is expected to be on the shelf for much of 2014, the executive said the general certainty of his timetable rules out the creation of another belt.

“We know when Cain’s coming back; we know when Anthony Pettis is coming back,” White said following this past Saturday’s UFC on FOX 9, which took place at Sacramento’s Sleep Train Arena (watch White’s UFC on FOX 9 media scrum). “We do [interim titles] when we don’t know when somebody’s going to come back or what’s going on.”

true, there should be some sort of re-negotiation when there's an interim title made and treat it like it's the real title for the time being cause the fights are between the two best active fighters in their divisions

^Yeah thats cool but again is the proper money, title etc going to go with it?  I think whats happening with Barao couldnt be more fucked up.  Not only has he defended the belt multiple times but he actually finishes people, Dom hasnt finished anyone at all since maybe his WEC days.

that's why I think they should be fighting for the interim title and not the #1 contender then they should defend the interim title as tho it's the real title then unify them when the other champ comes back

Im sorry but if you are injured and going to be out a full calender year or more the title has to be vacated imo.  Pettis JUST won the fucking belt and again is going to be out a full year that is bullshit.  If youre not healthy give up the belt to the fighters who are.  I know its sounds harsh and a bit silly but its fucking up the whole division each time this happens.     You could go through many #1 contenders because as soon as somone is a contender say Barnett then he either has to sit out and fucking wait or fight again and possibly lose his spot to someone else who will have the same option and could lose again and so on and so on.  Its stupid.

I don't disagree with keeping Cruz as the champ tho, the UFC thought they knew when Cruz would be coming back like they do with Cain and Pettis but Cruz got re-injured and pushed back his coming back date and it seemed like the UFC had gone past the point of no return and was then forced to save face and keep Cruz as the champ while Barao defended his belt. But yes, in hindsight it would have been better if Cruz lost the title and came back to a tune up fight for the number one contender

not when they're treated as the regular title and the interim champ defends the title
