Aguilar: UFC strawweight champion will be #2

Saturday night at World Series of Fighting 8, Jessica Aguilar beat the previously unbeatn Alida Gray, earning the league's first women's straweight title.

Before the fight, she told MMAFighting's Guilherme Cruz that if she wins, the best women's woman strawweight fighter will not the winner of the 11 women signed for TUF 20, it will be her. The new UFC fighters included former Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza, who Aguilar beat in 2011.

"I don’t think I am the best, I am the best," said Aguilar. "I beat the best in the world. She can have the No. 2 spot, she can have her UFC belt, whatever she wants. I don’t even think she’s going to get it, I think Claudia is going to beat her, but that’s another conversation. I don’t think I am the best, I am the best.

"I’m very humble, but I think I need to start talking the truth. I put a lot of hard work and dedicate a lot of time to be where I am today. This is my title. I am the No. 1 strawweight in the world. It doesn’t matter if someone has the UFC belt, but they don’t have the best in the world. The best in the world right now is with WSoF."

"I have a contract here and I believe I’m in the right place right now. Everything happens for a reason. Later, in the future, when I win more fights, we’ll see what happens. But now I’m very happy with the WSOF, and very happy for those that the UFC has given an opportunity. It’s a great thing. But I’m going to continue winning and proving why I’m the No. 1 strawweight in the world and then we’ll see what happens."

Tecia Torres has 4 pro fights and is considered the #5 Strawweight in the world. Thug Rose is 2-1 and is one of the brightest prospects in the division. Alida Gray is a former Olympic alternate for the U.S. Judo team and has a crushing overhand right. She is ranked #11 in the Unified Rankings and was the best available opponent. It also means she's automatically ranked higher than 10 of the 16 girls that the UFC will have on TUF 20 unless they change their mind about Katja Kankaanpää (not fucking likely at this point).   Also I'm going to need a citation on how Gray "almost lost" to Katie Klimansky-Casimir because while I've not found footage of the match, everything I've been able to find points to Gray having dominated her en route to a 2nd round TKO. She isn't absolutely elite but she's anything but subpar. I was extremely impressed with Aguilar's ability to fuck her up, since in addition to everything else it also seemed like a very difficult style match-up on paper. This match absolutely allows Aguilar to hold onto her #1 ranking until her next match. Also keep in mind that all those girls on TUF will not be seen in a fight again until late August/early September. The Finale won't happen until late November/early December. Aguilar will be a free agent by the following March. Unless Aguilar loses or has a controversial win, that's not nearly enough time for the people who actually rank Women's Strawweight to drop her from the top spot. Keep in mind Carla Esparza has held onto the #2 spot for quite some time and hasn't faced a Top 10 fighter who was Top 10 at the time she fought them in just over 2 years now (this was six months after she lost to Aguilar btw).

Well since the UFC and WSOF are in bed together look forward to her taking on the UFC champion in a "super" fight to headline another "stacked" PPV somewhere down the road. I, for one, am looking forward to it.

She has to fight the best in the division to be considered #1. She just fought a girl that had 4 pro fights. That's a joke for the best fighter in the world to be fighting a prospect. She cant be considered #1 until she fighting girls in the top ten. Her fight before this she almost lost a dec to a girl that's not even top 20. She looked great on Sat but that's against sub par comp

You don't think the UFC can market someone into an instant title shot if they have the qualifications? I think they absolutely have shown they can do this. Casual fans didn't know who Hendo was when he walked into the cage holding two belts afer Rampage beat Liddell, and the UFC had little trouble marketting that fight. Even if the UFC has the two semi-finalist losers face each other to maximize the credibility of the winner, the people you're talking about being marketed as contenders will have either lost to the champion in a match televised just a week or two before the TUF Finale, or will have lost to the Runner-Up, also in a match aired just a week or two before the Finale. Unless they have a top fighter leave the show because of injury, or lose a really controversial decision, and then in either scenario win at the TUF Finale or shortly thereafter, they need an outsider to keep the division from being in a holding pattern while new challengers are brought up. If the UFC signs JAG and Mizuki Inoue simultaneously, I suppose that works too but Inoue appears to be staying with Invicta, and even if Knapp wantded to let her go, she has to get her release from Deep as well. JAG strikes me as the best option by far if she keeps winning, and the UFC cares about rankings and professional credibility whether they want to admit it or not.

She's def top 5 now, but once the UFC starts rolling with their 115 it will be hard for her to keep claiming that when most of the best will be fighting elsewhere.Imo, women's 115lb is the best and most exciting division. Exciting to see it start to get the recognition 135 has been getting.

Whoever comes out a tournament that includes the fighters Rowdy Bec, Carla Esparza, Claudia Gadelha, Joanne Calderwood, Tecia Torres, and Felice Herrig, will be the #1 Strawweight in the world based on the level of competition.

Interesting facts about Aguilar...Her finish over Gray was the first since November 18, 2010. Her other recent wins were all close decisions. Her record is 17-4.16 of the 21 fights have taken place in her home state of Florida. Her record when fighting in Florida? 15-1 (93.75% winning percentage). Her record when she fights out of state? 2-3 (40% winning percentage). Is it any wonder she didn't sign with Invicta or the UFC?

She's #1. Please dispute that.
